Tour overview

This 13-day small-group tour visits the highlights of Chile from north to south, flying between regions to make the most of your time. A tour leader travels with the group throughout, and you stay 12 nights in comfortable mid-range hotels, including two nights inside Torres del Paine National Park. Four domestic flights are included, along with private road transfers and boat trips. Breakfast is included daily, with two dinners, and the minimum age is 16.

The tour begins in Santiago, beneath the Andes, with an afternoon orientation and the view from San Cristóbal Hill, followed by a day trip to the coast for a walking tour of Valparaíso's UNESCO-listed old town, a maze of colourful houses, murals and funiculars, and neighbouring Viña del Mar. Santiago's old centre has fine colonial buildings around the Plaza de Armas.

A flight north takes you to the Atacama Desert and the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama, set among volcanoes, for three nights. You watch the sunset over the Moon Valley, explore the vast Atacama salt flat, its flamingo lagoons and the high Altiplano lakes, and visit the village of Toconao. A pre-dawn drive brings you to the El Tatio geysers for sunrise, with a free afternoon and an optional astronomy tour.

Next you fly to Puerto Montt and stay in Puerto Varas on Lake Llanquihue, with a full day walking across the lava fields of the Osorno volcano and seeing the rushing Petrohué Falls. A flight to Punta Arenas brings you to southern Patagonia, where a catamaran takes you to Magdalena Island to walk among tens of thousands of Magellanic penguins in season. Two nights in Torres del Paine follow, with a three-hour hike on the Hunters Trail, a free morning and an optional boat ride, before Puerto Natales and a flight back to Santiago. Look out for Andean condors soaring over the park's ridges.

The physical rating is medium, with walks of a few hours, early starts and high altitude in the north. This tour suits active travellers who want a comprehensive first visit to Chile. Single rooms are available for a supplement.
