Argostoli, Lassi and Svoronata: close to the capital and airport, with sandy beaches and lots of restaurants. Lourdas and Spartia: the south coast, with mountain views and peaceful beaches. Skala and Katelios: the south-east, with long beaches and a relaxed pace. Fiskardo: the pretty north, with a harbour full of yachts and great tavernas.

When to go and getting there
May to October is the season, with June and September ideal for warm sea and quiet beaches. Flights to Kefalonia take around three and a quarter hours from the UK. Argostoli, Lassi and Svoronata are 10 to 20 minutes from the airport; Skala and Fiskardo are around an hour to an hour and a half.
Things to do and what to eat
Swim at the famous Myrtos beach, take a boat into the underground lake of Melissani Cave, explore the Drogarati stalactite cave, visit the pastel village of Assos, and look out for loggerhead turtles in Argostoli harbour. Try Kefalonian meat pie, robola white wine from the mountain vineyards, and local honey and almond sweets.
