Tour overview

This 8-day small-group cycling trip links two of Central Europe's most beautiful capitals, riding through the forests and lakes of southern Bohemia and along the famous Danube cycle path. Groups have up to 15 travellers aged 14 and over, with a leader throughout. Bike hire is included for the cycling days, and a support vehicle carries your luggage and backs up the group on the longer rides. You stay seven nights in hotels: two in Prague and one each in Český Krumlov, Ardagger, Melk, Krems and Vienna. Breakfast is included daily.

After a welcome meeting in Prague, you are fitted to your bike and set off on a leader-led ride through the city's streets and lanes, with time for a beer at a local brewery. Next morning you travel by train or vehicle to České Budějovice, home of the original Budweiser, for a guided ride to Český Krumlov, a UNESCO-listed town of cobbled lanes and a great castle above a loop of the Vltava River.

From Český Krumlov you ride along the Vltava through the countryside to Lipno Lake and over the plateau into Austria, transferring to Ardagger on the Danube. From there the riding is mostly flat, on dedicated cycle paths beside the mighty river. You cycle from Kollmitzberg to Melk, around 60km, and visit Melk's magnificent baroque abbey, then follow the northern bank through the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO landscape of vineyards, apricot orchards and riverside villages, to the old town of Krems.

The final day is the longest ride, around 70km along the Danube cycle path all the way into Vienna, where an orientation walk introduces the city's palaces, coffee houses and grand boulevards before a farewell evening.

The physical rating is medium, with daily rides of up to 70km, mostly on flat paths with some hills in Bohemia. This trip suits regular cyclists who want to see Central Europe at an active, sociable pace, with the reassurance of vehicle support. Evenings are free to enjoy local beer and wine in the riverside towns, and the variety of scenery, from Bohemian forests to the Danube's vineyard terraces, keeps every day different. Departures run from late spring to early autumn.
