Tour overview

This 4-day small-group short break shows you Vienna through its food, its palaces and the vineyards of the Danube, with a local leader to make the most of every hour. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over. You stay three nights at the Hotel Regina, a grand hotel close to the Ringstrasse, and travel by local public transport, train and boat. Three breakfasts, two lunches and a welcome dinner are included.

Your trip begins with a 10am welcome meeting, followed by an orientation walk through Vienna's compact centre, past St Stephen's Cathedral, the elegant shopping street of the Graben and the Hofburg, the Habsburgs' winter palace. In the evening you share a welcome dinner with the group.

The next morning starts with pastries and coffee on a coffee and market tour, as a local shows you the best places to eat and drink, from historic coffee houses to the stalls of the Naschmarkt, with lunch along the way. The afternoon is free to visit the city's museums, take in a concert or simply linger over a slice of Sachertorte.

On day three you take the train to Krems, gateway to the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards and apricot orchards along the Danube. A boat carries you upriver to Dürnstein, with its ice-blue abbey tower and the ruined castle where Richard the Lionheart was held captive, with time to walk up to the ruins or taste the local wines. On your final morning an audio-guided tour takes you through the private apartments and state rooms of Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence, before a farewell lunch.

The physical rating is low. This trip suits travellers who want a well-planned, sociable city break with a taste of the Danube, at a good price and with a small group. Your local leader shares tips on the best cafés, concerts and wine taverns, so your free time is well spent, and the central hotel makes it easy to explore on foot or by tram. Departures run through much of the year.
