Tour overview

This 9-day trip for travellers aged 18 to 35 crosses four countries of the southern Balkans, from Croatia's walled city of Dubrovnik through Montenegro and Albania to the Greek island of Corfu. Groups have up to 16 travellers, with a leader throughout and local guides along the way. You stay eight nights in a mix of hostels, guesthouses and hotels on a twin or multi-share basis, sometimes with shared facilities. Breakfast is included on six days, leaving plenty of freedom to try burek, grilled fish and Balkan street food. Expect a sociable, easy-going pace with free time to explore on your own.

After meeting in Dubrovnik, where you can walk the city walls and old town, you head into Montenegro for free time in Kotor, a medieval town of terracotta roofs below limestone mountains on its fjord-like bay, before an overnight stop on the coast at Ulcinj. Crossing into Albania, you reach the capital, Tirana, for an orientation walk and a visit to Bunk'Art 2, a Cold War bunker turned museum. A free day lets you explore the colourful markets and cafés or take public transport to the hill town of Krujë.

On the Albanian Riviera you spend two nights in Himarë, a less-visited town between the Ionian Sea and the Ceraunian Mountains. A speedboat tour takes you along the coast to Pigeon's Cave, Crystal Bay, Gjipe Beach and Pirate's Cave, with time to swim.

Inland, Gjirokastër is a beautifully preserved Ottoman town of stone tower houses and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a local guide you visit the Zekate tower house and the hilltop fortress and drink Turkish coffee brewed on hot stones. Finally, you travel to Sarandë and take a hydrofoil across the strait to Corfu for a last night in Greece.

The physical rating is low, with walking on cobbled streets and some steep climbs. This trip suits young travellers on a budget who want an affordable adventure through some of Europe's least-visited corners. Solo travellers share a room at no extra cost. Albania in particular rewards the curious, with warm hospitality, great-value food and a coastline still largely free of big resorts.
