Dubai and Maldives Holidays: How Many Nights Where

In this story

For most people, the right split is three nights in Dubai and seven in the Maldives. Dubai sits neatly on the way, about seven hours from the UK and four more to Malé, so a stopover breaks the long journey, gives you the city’s skyline, souks and desert, and then hands you over to a week of doing nothing on a coral island. Here is how to split your nights, which way round to do it, when to go and what it costs.

You’ll find on this page

How many nights in Dubai and the Maldives?

Dubai is a stopover, not the main event, so give it two to four nights. The Maldives needs at least five to be worth the extra flight; seven is where most people find the holiday really starts.

Total nights Dubai Maldives Who it suits
7 2 5 A short break; tight but possible
9 2 7 Maximum beach time with a taste of the city
10 3 7 Our recommendation for most couples
12 3 9 Honeymoons: more time on the island
14 4 10 Families: theme parks, beach club and a long island stay

You can change the split on any trip; tell us what you want to do in Dubai and we will suggest the right number of nights.

Why three nights in Dubai? Your first day goes on arrival and getting your bearings. A second day covers the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the old town and creek. The third is for a desert safari, a beach club or Atlantis Aquaventure. Any fewer and you leave feeling you missed the city; any more and you are eating into island time.

Dubai first or Maldives first?

We usually recommend Dubai first. You recover from the long-haul flight in a city hotel, explore while you still have energy, then finish on the beach and fly home relaxed. It also means the shorter Dubai to Malé flight lands in daylight more often, which matters if your resort is reached by seaplane, as seaplanes only fly by day.

Maldives first suits shoppers who want to buy at the end of the trip without carrying bags around, and honeymooners who want to go straight to the island after the wedding. If you do it this way round, end with two or three nights in a beach hotel in Dubai rather than a city one, so the holiday does not end too abruptly.

When to go

The best time for a Dubai and Maldives holiday is November to April. Dubai is warm rather than fierce, around 24 to 33 °C, and the Maldives is in its dry season with calm seas and long sunny days. February and March are close to perfect for both.

Months Dubai Maldives Verdict
November to March Warm, sunny, ideal for outdoor sightseeing Dry season, calm and clear Best for both
April and October Hot, but fine with an indoor plan for midday Changeable; showers increase Good value
May, June and September Very hot; beaches and pools by morning, malls by afternoon Wet season, sunny spells Cheapest
July and August Extremely hot, often over 40 °C Wet season, sunny spells Only for the heat-proof

How to spend your Dubai nights

  • Day one: arrive, pool, then the Dubai Fountain show and dinner in Downtown.
  • Day two: Burj Khalifa in the morning, before the heat; old Dubai in the afternoon: an abra across the creek, the gold and spice souks, Al Fahidi.
  • Day three: beach club or Aquaventure, then an evening desert safari with dinner under the stars.

Where to stay depends on the trip. JBR and Dubai Marina give you a beach and lots of restaurants on the doorstep. Downtown is best for sightseeing. Palm Jumeirah is for resort hotels and families heading to Atlantis. Our Dubai and UAE guide covers each area in detail, and our Dubai offers start from £722 pp for a beach or city break on its own.

Choosing the Maldives half

Two choices matter most. The transfer: resorts near Malé are reached by speedboat at any time of day; outer atolls need a seaplane or a domestic flight, which can mean waiting at the airport or a night near Malé. The board basis: all-inclusive is usually best value, because every meal and drink comes from the resort. See our guides to all-inclusive Maldives holidays and the best Maldives resorts.

Good to know before you book

  • Flight times: UK to Dubai about 7 hours; Dubai to Malé about 4 hours.
  • Time difference: Dubai is four hours ahead of the UK in winter and the Maldives five; in summer, three and four.
  • Dress: in Dubai, cover shoulders and knees in malls, souks and mosques; swimwear is fine at the beach and pool.
  • Ramadan: Dubai is quieter, with daytime eating and drinking in public restricted, but hotels serve guests as usual.
  • UK airports: Dubai flights leave from many UK airports, so you may not need to travel to London.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I spend in Dubai before the Maldives?

Three nights is right for most people: enough for the Burj Khalifa, old Dubai and a desert safari. Two works on a short trip, and four suits families who want the theme parks.

Is it better to do Dubai or the Maldives first?

Usually Dubai first. You recover from the flight in the city, then finish relaxed on the beach. Maldives first suits shoppers and honeymooners heading straight to the island.

What is the best time for a Dubai and Maldives holiday?

November to April. Dubai is warm rather than very hot and the Maldives is in its dry season. February and March are ideal for both.

How long is the flight from Dubai to the Maldives?

About four hours. The UK to Dubai is about seven hours, so the stopover splits the journey almost in half.

Is a Dubai and Maldives holiday expensive?

Less than many people expect. Because most UK flights to the Maldives connect in the Gulf anyway, adding Dubai mainly costs the hotel nights. Abu Dhabi and Doha stopovers are often cheaper still.

Can I do Dubai and the Maldives with children?

Yes. Choose four nights in Dubai for the beach and theme parks, and a family-friendly island resort with a kids’ club and speedboat transfer.
