Family Adventure Holidays With Teenagers: Tours They Won’t Roll Their Eyes At

In this story

Holidays with teenagers follow a familiar plot. You spend months planning; they spend the first day looking at their phone with the haunted expression of someone who has been told the Wi-Fi is “patchy”. The secret, as every seasoned parent eventually discovers, is to keep them busy, slightly out of their comfort zone and, ideally, in the company of other teenagers. Nothing makes a 14-year-old enjoy white-water rafting like a 15-year-old who’s also enjoying it.

That’s exactly what our family group tours with teenagers do: small groups of families, a leader who knows how to keep everyone engaged, and days built around doing things, not looking at them. Here are the ones most likely to earn a grudging “actually, that was quite good”.

Why a family group tour works with teenagers

Other teenagers. The single biggest factor. Teens who wouldn’t speak to you over breakfast will happily spend the day with new friends from another family.

Someone else is in charge. A leader who isn’t a parent is somehow far more persuasive about early starts.

Every day has a hook. Rafting, cycling, snorkelling, a night on a boat or a homestay: there’s always something to look forward to, and something to post about later.

No logistics for you. Transport, activities and guides are arranged, so you can enjoy the holiday too.

Eye-roll risk: very low. The honest drawback: only breakfasts and a lunch are included, and it’s not a relaxing holiday.
