Tuscany is Italy at its most romantic: Renaissance Florence, hill towns like San Gimignano and Siena, cypress-lined roads, vineyards and long lunches. The best holidays here combine a little city sightseeing with time in the countryside, and several of our hotels include car hire to make exploring easy.
These ten hotels are the ones our guests rate most highly, from Florence boutiques to wine estates and the beach at Viareggio.

City, countryside or coast?
Florence: the Uffizi, the Duomo and Michelangelo’s David, best for two or three nights. The countryside around Siena, San Gimignano and Chianti: wine estates, hill towns and spa hotels, perfect with a car. Lucca and Montecatini Terme: elegant, less touristy towns with good rail links to Florence and Pisa. Viareggio: a classic Italian beach resort with an Art Nouveau seafront. Many guests combine Florence with a week in the countryside.
How we chose these hotels
We sell 40 hotels in Tuscany. To build this list we started with every hotel in the region, including Florence, Lucca and the coast, then read what our guests say: every hotel here is well rated on TripAdvisor. We spread our picks across different areas where we can, and we only include hotels you can book with us today as an ATOL-protected package with flights and transfers. Prices change daily, so use the search box at the end of this page for live availability, or ask a Travel Designer for a tailored shortlist.
When to go and getting around
May, June, September and October are ideal: warm days, green or golden countryside, and the grape harvest in autumn. July and August are hot and busy in Florence. Flights to Pisa take around two hours from the UK. Florence is about an hour from Pisa by train or car, and Siena and San Gimignano around an hour and a half. Several of the countryside hotels in this guide include car hire, which is by far the best way to explore. Note that Florence’s historic centre is a restricted traffic zone, so leave the car outside.
Things to do and what to eat
See the Uffizi, climb Brunelleschi’s dome and cross the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, wander the medieval towers of San Gimignano, admire Siena’s shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, cycle Lucca’s city walls, and visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tour a Chianti winery, and try bistecca alla fiorentina, ribollita (a hearty bread and vegetable soup), pici pasta, pecorino cheese and cantucci biscuits dipped in vin santo.
