Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast?
Sorrento is the best base for sightseeing, with ferries, trains and buses to Capri, Pompeii, Naples and the Amalfi Coast, plus lots of restaurants. The Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello) is more romantic and dramatic, but steeper and harder to get around. Many guests combine the two.
How we chose these hotels
We sell 49 hotels in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. To build this list we started with every hotel in the area, then read what our guests say: every hotel here is well rated on TripAdvisor. We spread our picks across different resorts so you can compare areas, and we only include hotels you can book with us today as an ATOL-protected package with flights and transfers. Things to do
Take the ferry to Capri and its Blue Grotto, explore Pompeii and Herculaneum, drive the Amalfi Coast road, visit the gardens of Ravello, walk the Path of the Gods above Positano, and taste limoncello where it is made.
When to go and getting around
The season runs from April to October. July and August are hot and busy, while May, June, September and early October offer warm sea and a more relaxed pace. Flights to Naples take around two and a half hours from the UK. Ferries connect Sorrento with Capri, Positano and Amalfi in summer, and the Circumvesuviana train runs from Sorrento to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples. The Amalfi Coast road is spectacular but narrow, so many guests prefer the boat.
Eating and drinking
Naples is the birthplace of pizza, and the whole region is a food lover’s dream. Try gnocchi alla sorrentina baked with tomato and mozzarella, spaghetti alle vongole with fresh clams, and buffalo mozzarella from Paestum. Finish with delizia al limone, a lemon cream sponge, and a glass of ice-cold limoncello made from the coast’s famous lemons.
