Tour overview

This 8-day escorted tour follows the Advent season through three countries, from the medieval squares of Poland to the grand Christmas markets of Prague, Dresden and Berlin. You travel by comfortable coach with a tour director throughout and local experts in each city, and several days have a relaxed start. You stay seven nights in handpicked central hotels: two in Kraków, one in Wrocław, two at the Royal in Prague and two at the Crowne Plaza in Berlin. Seven breakfasts and three dinners are included, among them a welcome dinner with wine in Kraków and a progressive dine-around in Prague with goulash, dumplings, a taste of pear brandy or Becherovka and festive treats at the market. Airport transfers run on the first and last days.

In Kraków your first evening ends among the wooden stalls of the Main Square, one of Europe's largest medieval market places. Next morning a local expert leads you up Wawel Hill to the Renaissance castle and the cathedral where Poland's kings are buried, then through the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz.

On the way west you visit the memorial and museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau, a sobering and important experience, before reaching Wrocław, the Venice of Poland, built across 12 islands with more than 100 bridges and a Christmas market that is among the country's best. Crossing into the Czech Republic, you spend two nights in Prague, the City of a Hundred Spires, choosing between the courtyards of Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral or a guided walk with a local expert, with time for the markets in the Old Town Square.

In Dresden you see the rebuilt Frauenkirche and visit the Striezelmarkt, one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, before continuing to Berlin. A local expert shows you the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, the Reichstag and remnants of the Berlin Wall, with a farewell dinner to finish.

The physical rating is low, with walking on cobbles in winter weather. This tour suits travellers who want festive atmosphere with real depth, combining markets with the history of Central Europe.
