Trip overview

Start with three nights in Midtown Manhattan, close enough to Times Square to walk to a Broadway show, the Top of the Rock and Central Park. Then take the short hop south to Barbados for a week of warm sea, rum shacks and Bajan cooking. It is one of the easiest ways to pair a big city with a proper beach holiday, because the island has direct flights home to the UK.

We plan it as an open-jaw trip: you fly London to New York, New York to Barbados, then straight home from Bridgetown. The beach week is all-inclusive on the south coast, near the bars and restaurants of St Lawrence Gap, and you can swap to the calmer west coast or add extra nights in either place.

Barbados is at its driest from December to April, which is also when New York is cold and bright. Spring and late autumn give you milder city days and better-value beach weeks.

Hotel Edison or similar

Three nights is enough for the classics: a show on Broadway, the view from the Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building, a walk along the High Line and an afternoon in Central Park. Staying in Midtown keeps most sights within walking distance or a short subway ride.

Good to know

How do you get from New York to Barbados?

JetBlue and American Airlines fly direct from New York JFK to Barbados in about 4½ hours. You then fly home direct from Barbados to the UK, so there is no need to go back through New York.

Do I need an ESTA for this trip?

Yes. British passport holders need an approved ESTA to enter the United States, even for a short stay. UK citizens do not need a visa for Barbados for a holiday stay.

Can I stay on the west coast of Barbados instead?

Yes. The west (Platinum) coast has calmer water and quieter, more upmarket hotels. The south coast is livelier and generally better value. We can price either.

Can I fly from a regional UK airport?

Virgin Atlantic flies from Manchester to both New York and Barbados, so a Manchester version is possible on many dates. From other airports we would usually connect via London.
