Trip overview

This trip covers Thailand's three best-known faces in under two weeks. Begin with three nights in Bangkok for the Grand Palace, the river and the food. Fly north to Chiang Mai, a walled old city of teak temples, night markets and green hills, where the pace drops and the air is cooler in winter. It's the best place in Thailand for a cooking class.

Then fly south to Phuket for seven nights by the Andaman Sea, with time to rest after the touring. Each leg is linked by a short domestic flight, so you spend your time in places rather than on the road. The guide price is based on a boutique hotel in Chiang Mai and five-star hotels in Bangkok and Phuket, with breakfast throughout.

We can add nights in Chiang Mai, or swap Phuket for Khao Lak or Krabi, if you'd prefer.

Good to know

How do you travel between Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket?

By domestic flight. Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and there are direct flights from Chiang Mai to Phuket of about 2 hours.

Is two nights in Chiang Mai enough?

Two nights covers the old city and Doi Suthep. Add a third night for a cooking class, an ethical elephant sanctuary or a day trip to Chiang Rai's White Temple.

Could I take the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?

Yes. The overnight sleeper train takes around 11 to 13 hours and is a memorable way to travel. We can swap it in for the flight.

When is the smoky season in Chiang Mai?

Crop burning can cause hazy, poor-quality air in northern Thailand, usually from late February to April. For clear skies, travel between November and early February.
