Budapest to Istanbul: Hungary, Romania & Bulgaria – 14 Days
Overland through four countries and four capitals, from Budapest's baths to Transylvania's castles and Istanbul's bazaars.
Tour overview
This 14-day small-group journey travels overland from the Danube to the Bosphorus, through four countries and four capital cities. Groups have between 4 and 16 travellers aged 16 and over, with an experienced local tour leader throughout and local guides for city walks. You travel by air-conditioned minibus and stay in comfortable, well-located hotels, locally owned where possible, for 13 nights. Breakfast is included daily, with a welcome dinner, two lunches and a farewell dinner, plus group airport transfers at set times in Budapest and Istanbul.
Budapest, split by the Danube into historic Buda and lively Pest, starts the trip with a guided walk and a free afternoon for the thermal baths. Heading north-east, you visit the World Heritage village of Hollókő, known for its Palóc folk culture, the baroque city of Eger and a cellar in the Tokaj region for a tasting of Hungary's famous sweet wine.

Crossing into Romania, two nights in the Maramureș region reveal a rural way of life that has barely changed in a century, with tall wooden churches, carved gates and villages that keep their own dress and customs. A scenic drive through Transylvania stops at Sighișoara, the walled medieval town where Vlad the Impaler was born, before Brașov and a tour of Peleș Castle, a fairytale royal palace in the Carpathian Mountains. In Bucharest, a local expert leads a walk past the vast Palace of the Parliament and the old town.
South of the Danube in Bulgaria, you explore Veliko Tarnovo, the hilltop capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire above the Yantra River, take an orientation walk through Sofia's markets and cafés, and see the Roman theatre of Philippopolis in Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest cities. The journey ends in Istanbul, where a local guide shows you the Sultanahmet area, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and Topkapı Palace before a farewell dinner.
The physical rating is low, with walking in towns and some long drives. This trip suits travellers who want to see the lesser-known corners of south-east Europe in comfort, ending in one of the world's great cities. Most hotels are in walking distance of the old towns.
