Tour overview

This 8-day small-group holiday packs a week of mountain adventure into the tiny Pyrenean country of Andorra, from a single base. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with specialist activity guides and a local host. You stay all week at the Hotel Roc de Sant Miquel, a simple, friendly, family-run chalet hotel in the village of Soldeu with just 12 en-suite rooms, a restaurant and a bar. Breakfast is included daily, with four dinners, and a private bus handles all transfers, with a support vehicle on the mountain-biking day. All rafting and safety equipment is provided. Soldeu is a small mountain village with cafés and bars, best known as a ski resort in winter.

Andorra sits high on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees between France and Spain, and its valleys, lakes and forests make it a natural playground. The week begins in the Cortals Valley, riding the only flat off-road track in the country to Engolasters Lake, with optional harder trails and a zip-wire ride. Next you hike up the Ransol valley to Salamandres Lake, passing the Roca del Home Dret, a standing rock with its own legend, and perhaps spotting the yellow-spotted salamanders that give the lake its name.

A drive over the Port de Cantó into Spain leads to the rivers around Sort, where local guides take you white-water rafting on rapids of up to Class 3. Another day follows a single-track trail through the forested Incles Valley, bright with rhododendrons in June and wild fruit and mushrooms later in the season.

The mountain-bike day starts with a shuttle to Port d'Envalira, at 2,408 metres the highest road pass in the Pyrenees and a regular climb in the Tour de France, before a long ride through the mountains with your guides. The final full day is free: soak in the thermal baths of Caldea, try a via ferrata or head out for more walking or biking.

The physical rating is medium, and no previous experience of rafting or mountain biking is needed. This holiday suits active travellers who want variety, fresh mountain air and a sociable group, with the comfort of one base all week.
