Where to stay in Florence
Around the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria: the heart of the city, with the main sights a few minutes’ walk away. Santa Maria Novella: close to the station, handy for day trips to Pisa, Lucca and Siena. Oltrarno: across the river, artisan workshops and a local feel. The hills (Fiesole and beyond): calm and green, with views over the city and a short ride in.
Tips for visiting
Book timed tickets for the Uffizi, the Accademia (for David) and the Duomo climb well in advance. Visit early or late to avoid the crowds, and climb to Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset. Florence’s historic centre is a restricted traffic zone, so do not drive in. Flights to Florence or Pisa take around two hours; the train from Pisa takes about an hour.
