Kokkari: a charming fishing village on the north coast with pebble beaches and wonderful scenery. Karlovasi: the quieter west, close to some of the island’s most beautiful beaches and walking trails. Kampos (Votsalakia): a long beach on the south-west coast.

When to go and getting there
May to October is the season, with June and September ideal for warm sea and quiet beaches. Flights to Samos take around four hours from the UK, and Pythagorion is just a few minutes from the airport; Kokkari and Karlovasi are around 30 to 60 minutes away.
Things to do and what to eat
Explore the UNESCO-listed Heraion sanctuary and the Tunnel of Eupalinos, an ancient engineering marvel near Pythagorion, hike to the Potami waterfalls, swim at Tsamadou and Lemonakia beaches near Kokkari, and visit a mountain village such as Vourliotes or Manolates. Samos is famous for its sweet Muscat wine, and the tavernas serve excellent fresh fish, revithada (slow-baked chickpeas) and local honey.
