Tsilivi: north-east, with shallow water and stylish suite hotels. Agios Sostis and Laganas: the south, near the turtle beaches of the National Marine Park; Laganas itself is lively. Kalamaki: quieter, with a sandy beach. Argassi and Vasilikos: close to Zante Town, with access to some of the island’s best beaches. Tragaki and Akrotiri: peaceful and upmarket.

When to go and getting there
May to October is the season. June and September are ideal for warm sea and calm beaches; July and August are hot and lively. Flights take around three and a quarter hours from the UK, and most resorts are within 20 to 30 minutes of the airport.
Things to do and what to eat
Take a boat trip to Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach and the Blue Caves, look out for loggerhead turtles on a responsible boat tour in Laganas Bay, visit Marathonisi island, and explore Zante Town’s Solomos Square. Try local olive oil, sofrito (veal in a garlic and wine sauce), fresh grilled fish and mandolato, a nougat made on the island.
