Where to stay in Montenegro
Tivat and Luštica: smart marinas and luxury hotels, five minutes from the airport. The Bay of Kotor (Kotor, Perast): UNESCO-listed towns, mountains and calm water. Herceg Novi: a pretty old town at the mouth of the bay. Budva and Bečići: the liveliest beaches, with a walled old town. Sveti Stefan: the famous island village and chic beaches. Ulcinj: the sandy south, near the Albanian border.

When to go and getting there
May to October is the season, with June and September ideal; July and August are hot and busy. Flights to Tivat take around two and three-quarter hours from the UK. Tivat and the bay hotels are minutes from the airport, Budva around 30 minutes and Ulcinj about an hour and a half. Some guests fly into Dubrovnik and combine Montenegro with Croatia.
Things to do and what to eat
Climb the walls above Kotor for the classic view of the bay, take a boat to the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks off Perast, wander Budva’s old town, drive the serpentine road to Lovćen National Park, and take a day trip to Dubrovnik. Try Njeguški pršut (smoked ham) and cheese, fresh mussels from the bay, grilled fish, and local Vranac red wine.
