Rome is the ultimate city break: the Colosseum and the Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, piazzas full of fountains and some of the best food in Italy. Where you stay makes a huge difference, because the historic centre is best explored on foot.
These ten hotels are the ones our guests rate most highly. Most have a rooftop terrace, and every one puts the city’s great sights within easy reach.

Via Nazionale: central, well connected and good value.
How we chose these hotels
We sell 69 hotels in Rome. To build this list we started with every hotel in the city, then read what our guests say: every hotel here is well rated on TripAdvisor. We spread our picks across different areas where we can, and we only include hotels you can book with us today as an ATOL-protected package with flights and transfers. When to go and how to beat the queues
April to June and September to October are ideal, with warm days and long evenings. July and August are hot and busy, while winter is cooler and quieter, with lower prices. Flights take around two and a half hours from the UK. Book timed tickets for the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums well ahead, visit the Trevi Fountain early in the morning, and keep afternoons for a long lunch and a siesta.
Things to do and what to eat
Explore the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, stand beneath the dome of the Pantheon, see Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, and wander the cobbled lanes of Trastevere at dusk. Rome’s classic pasta dishes are cacio e pepe, carbonara and amatriciana; try supplì (fried rice balls), carciofi alla giudia (fried artichokes) in the old Jewish Ghetto, and gelato from a proper gelateria.
