The Five Stans of the Silk Road: Ashgabat to Almaty – 23 Days
All five Central Asian countries in one journey, from Merv and Samarkand to the Fann Mountains, Son Kul's yurts and Almaty.
Tour overview
This 23-day small-group journey crosses all five countries of Central Asia along the old Silk Road, from the white-marble capital of Turkmenistan to the mountain-ringed city of Almaty in Kazakhstan. Groups have between 4 and 16 travellers aged 16 and over, with an expert tour leader and local crews in each country. You travel by minibus, two trains and one internal flight, and stay 20 nights in hotels and guesthouses and two nights in a traditional yurt camp. All breakfasts, one lunch and five dinners are included, along with arrival and departure transfers. Visa paperwork for Turkmenistan is arranged with the help of a letter of invitation.
Turkmenistan opens with the gleaming monuments of Ashgabat, the vast World Heritage site of ancient Merv, the Parthian fortress of Nisa and a meeting with the prized Akhal-Teke horses, before a flight north to Dashoguz and the medieval minarets of Kunya Urgench. Crossing into Uzbekistan, you explore the walled inner city of Khiva and meet its craftsmen, then take trains to the 2,000-year-old trading city of Bukhara and to Samarkand, whose blue-tiled Registan dazzles in the sun.

In Tajikistan you visit the World Heritage site of Sarazm and the ancient town of Penjikent, then drive into the Fann Mountains to the Seven Lakes, each a different shade of turquoise. The route continues via Istaravshan and Khujand back into Uzbekistan's fertile Ferghana Valley, with the potters of Rishtan and the silk workshops of Margilan.
Kyrgyzstan brings the great bazaar city of Osh, the walnut forests of Arslanbob and a long drive up to the high pastures of Son Kul, at more than 3,000 metres, for two nights in a yurt camp among nomadic herders. You visit felt workshops in Kochkor, watch an eagle-hunting demonstration on the shores of Issyk-Kul and see the waterfalls of Barskoon Gorge and the town of Karakol. The final border crossing leads past the Charyn Canyon to Almaty, with a full day to explore.
The physical rating is medium, with long drives on rough roads, several border crossings and basic shared facilities at the yurt camp. This trip suits seasoned travellers who want to see the whole of Central Asia in one journey.

Frequently asked questions
How do I book this tour?
Tap any "Enquire" button on the page and one of our travel specialists will be in touch within 24 hours (often same day). We'll confirm availability on your preferred date, run through anything you need to know, and only ask for the deposit once you've decided.
What financial protection do I get?
Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.
Do I need visas?
Turkmenistan requires a visa with a letter of invitation, arranged well ahead of travel. Visa rules for the other four countries vary by nationality, so check before you book.
What is the yurt camp like?
Traditional felt yurts at Son Kul, with shared Western-style toilets and intermittent hot water. It is basic, but the setting is spectacular.
How long are the drives?
Some days are long, up to nine hours on the way to Son Kul, with rough stretches of road and border crossings that can take one to two hours.
How fit do I need to be?
The physical rating is medium. Walks are optional and short, but the altitude at Son Kul, at over 3,000 metres, can be tiring.
Do we change leaders?
Your tour leader travels with you, joined by local crews and guides as you cross into each country.
What is the minimum age?
The minimum age is 16, and travellers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Can you tailor the trip?
Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.
What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
Not quite the right fit? Make it tailor-made.
If this group tour doesn't match your ideal trip, our specialists will turn it into a private tailor-made journey — your own dates, your own pace, upgraded hotels where you want them, and the parts you don't love swapped out. Same destinations, just rebuilt around you.
