Tour overview

This 6-day escorted break explores County Donegal and the north coast of Northern Ireland, two of the wildest and most beautiful corners of the island. Return flights to Belfast are included, from a choice of ten UK airports, and a tour leader looks after the group throughout. You stay all five nights at the three-star Station House Hotel in Letterkenny, with breakfast daily and four dinners, so there is no packing and unpacking. Comfortable coach travel and all excursions are included.

On the first afternoon you can explore Letterkenny, with St Eunan's Cathedral above the town, the Market Square and the riverside walk along the Swilly. The first excursion goes to Donegal town, set around its old marketplace, the Diamond. Its Jacobean castle stands above the River Eske, and in fine weather you can take an optional waterbus around Donegal Bay to see the seals on Seal Island and the Bluestack Mountains.

Next comes the remote Inishowen Peninsula, bordered by Lough Foyle, Lough Swilly and the Atlantic, with wide beaches and mountains rising from the sea. You reach Malin Head, Ireland's most northerly point, familiar from the Shipping Forecast. You also visit the Doagh Isle Famine Village, built around thatched cottages lived in until 1983, which tells the story of Irish life from the Great Famine to the present.

For many, the highlight is the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of around 40,000 basalt columns formed by volcanic activity some 60 million years ago and linked in legend to the giant Finn McCool. Entry to the visitor centre and an audio guide are included. On the way back you stop in Derry to walk its 400-year-old city walls and see the murals of the Bogside. The final excursion is to Glenveagh National Park, home to red deer and reintroduced golden eagles, for a guided tour of Glenveagh Castle and time in its gardens by Lough Veagh.

The pace is easy, with short walks from the coach. It suits travellers who want an easy, good-value introduction to Ireland's north-west, with flights and transfers arranged.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book this tour?

Tap any "Enquire" button on the page and one of our travel specialists will be in touch within 24 hours (often same day). We'll confirm availability on your preferred date, run through anything you need to know, and only ask for the deposit once you've decided.

What financial protection do I get?

Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.

Are flights included?

Yes. Return flights to Belfast are included from ten UK airports, including London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The price depends on the airport.

How long is the airport transfer?

About two hours each way between Belfast airport and Letterkenny. Transfers may be shared, so you may wait up to an hour on arrival.

How much walking is there?

Short walks from the coach on most days. At the Giant's Causeway the path to the stones is about a mile each way, with a local shuttle bus if you prefer.

What meals are included?

5 breakfasts and 4 dinners at the hotel. Lunches are at your own cost.

Do I need euros or sterling?

Both are useful. Donegal is in the Republic of Ireland, which uses euros, while the Giant's Causeway and Derry are in Northern Ireland, which uses sterling.

Is the hotel accessible?

The hotel has a lift. If you use a wheelchair, tell the team when you book so arrangements can be made.

Can you tailor the trip?

Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
