Tour overview

This 13-day small-group tour links Chile's three great landscapes, the glaciers and granite towers of Patagonia, the volcanoes and lakes of the south, and the Atacama Desert, with internal flights to save long journeys. Groups have between 5 and 16 travellers aged 16 and over, with an expert tour leader throughout. You stay 12 nights in regionally inspired three-star hotels, including two nights at a lakeside inn inside Torres del Paine National Park. Breakfast is included daily, with three dinners, and group transfers are available on arrival and departure.

The adventure begins in Santiago, a modern city with an old colonial heart, with a city tour and a visit to a winery in the Maipo Valley. A flight south takes you to Puerto Natales in Patagonia and on into Torres del Paine for three days of exploring: a full day of highlights by road and on foot, one of the park's classic walks of around five hours, free time to hike or relax by the lake, and a boat trip across Lago Grey to the face of Grey Glacier.

From Patagonia you fly to Puerto Montt and stay in Puerto Varas, a town of German-style houses on Lago Llanquihue, beneath the perfect cone of the Osorno volcano. A full day in the Lake District brings a boat trip on the emerald waters of Lago Todos los Santos and a walk on the slopes of Osorno.

The final region is the Atacama, the driest non-polar desert on Earth. From the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama you visit the Salar de Atacama and the high Altiplano lagoons, stopping at the village of Socaire, and rise very early to reach the El Tatio geysers, at more than 4,300 metres, for sunrise, with an optional night-time astronomy tour under some of the clearest skies in the world. A flight returns you to Santiago for a final evening.

The physical rating is medium, with walks of up to five hours, early starts and high altitude in the north. This tour suits active travellers who want to see the very different faces of Chile in under two weeks.
