Tour overview

This 14-day expedition cruise sails from the ice of west Greenland across the Davis Strait to the Canadian Arctic and down the coast of Labrador to Newfoundland, following the route of the Vikings a thousand years ago. You sail on Ocean Explorer, a small, ice-rated expedition ship carrying around 138 passengers, with a tour leader and a team of qualified expedition staff, including glaciologists, historians and wildlife specialists. Frequent Zodiac landings take you ashore. The trip includes one hotel night in Reykjavik, a charter flight to Kangerlussuaq, all meals on board with beer and house wine at dinner, and all landings and activities. It is offered on a single departure in September 2027.

After a night in Reykjavik, a charter flight takes you to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland to board the ship. You explore the west coast towns of Sisimiut and Maniitsoq, set among fjords, mountains and glaciers, and then Ilulissat, whose UNESCO-listed icefjord produces some of the largest icebergs in the northern hemisphere.

Crossing the Davis Strait, with lectures from the onboard experts, you reach Nunavut, Canada's youngest territory. At Pangnirtung you meet a stronghold of Inuit culture, and at Cape Mercy you visit an isolated cove named by the English explorer John Davis in 1585. Two days follow in Torngat Mountains National Park, a wilderness of fjords, glaciers and Canada's highest peaks east of the Rockies, where polar bears and caribou roam.

At Nain, administrative capital of Nunatsiavut, you learn about Labrador Inuit heritage through exhibits and art. A day at sea watching for whales and seabirds leads to L'Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America, where Norse explorers landed around 1000 CE. The voyage ends with a final day at sea ending in St John's, Newfoundland.

The physical rating is medium, as Zodiac landings involve climbing in and out of small boats and walking on uneven ground. Itineraries are flexible and depend on ice and weather. This trip suits adventurous travellers who want to experience the remote Arctic, its wildlife and its history from a comfortable small ship.
