Sustainable travel

Travel that gives back

The places we love only stay special if they're looked after. Here's how we try to make every trip we plan a little kinder to the people and places you visit — and where we're still learning.

Where we stand

An honest starting point

Travelisto is a small, independent UK travel company. We don't currently hold a sustainability certification, and we aren't members of a sustainable tourism body. We'd rather tell you that plainly than borrow a badge we haven't earned.

What we do have is a team that travels constantly, knows the destinations first-hand, and cares about leaving them better than we found them. Responsible travel is part of how we plan every trip — not an add-on.

How we support it

What we do, trip by trip

Practical choices our Travel Designers make when planning your holiday.

Local partners, local money

Wherever we can, we build trips around locally owned hotels, guesthouses, guides and ground handlers — so more of what you spend stays in the place you visit.

Fewer, longer, slower

We'd rather plan one great trip with time to settle in than three rushed ones. Fewer internal flights, more nights per stop, and rail where it genuinely works.

Responsible suppliers

When choosing between operators, cruise lines and hotels, we look at how they treat their staff, communities and environment — and we'll tell you what we know.

Wildlife and culture, with respect

We steer travellers away from experiences that exploit animals or people, and towards ethical wildlife encounters and community-led tourism.

Honest timing advice

Shoulder season, quieter regions, the lesser-known island next door. Travelling off-peak eases pressure on busy places — and is usually a better holiday too.

Giving back

We donate to charities supporting climate projects and the communities we work with, and we're happy to point you to reputable local causes if you want to do the same.

The journey is part of the holiday

Some of the best days of a trip happen between destinations: a mountain railway, a ferry between islands, a drive through vineyards with time to stop. Swapping a short flight for the train, or one hotel change for two longer stays, lowers the impact of your holiday and usually makes it more relaxing too.

Our Travel Designers will show you where rail and overland links genuinely work, and where a flight still makes more sense. No lectures, just honest options.

Explore rail holidays

Ask us anything about the impact of your trip. If we don't know the answer, we'll find out and tell you straight.

Spend where it counts

A family-run guesthouse, a local guide who grew up in the valley, lunch at the market rather than the hotel buffet: small choices like these decide how much of your holiday budget stays with the people who make a place special.

When we plan your trip, we suggest locally owned stays, guides and experiences wherever they suit you, and we'll point you to the markets and makers worth seeking out.

Your part

Simple ways to travel lighter

Small habits that add up — we'll help you build them into your trip.

  • Stay longer in fewer places — and take the train between them where you can.
  • Choose locally owned stays, restaurants and guides.
  • Pack light, bring a refillable bottle and skip single-use plastics.
  • Learn a few words of the local language and respect local customs and dress codes.
  • Say no to animal rides, selfies with captive wildlife and anything that feels exploitative.
  • Buy crafts and souvenirs direct from the people who make them.
What's next

What we're working towards

We'll update this page as we make progress.

Exploring certification

We're looking at recognised schemes for travel businesses, such as Travelife, to find the right fit for an agency of our size.

Better supplier information

We're gathering what our partners publish about their sustainability practices, so we can share it with you when you're choosing.

Lower-impact options

We're growing our range of rail journeys, small-group tours and slower itineraries for travellers who want them.

Good to know

Sustainable travel questions, answered

Is Travelisto certified for sustainable tourism?

Not yet. We don't hold a sustainability certification and we aren't members of a sustainable tourism body. We're looking at recognised schemes for travel businesses, such as Travelife, and we'll update this page when that changes.

Do you offer carbon offsetting?

We don't sell carbon offsets. If you'd like to offset your flights, look for projects verified under recognised standards such as Gold Standard or Verra. Cutting emissions comes first, though: fewer flights, longer stays and rail where it works make the biggest difference.

Is travelling by train better than flying?

For many journeys within Europe, the train produces much lower emissions per passenger than a short-haul flight, and city-centre stations save time at each end. It isn't always practical for long distances or tight schedules, so we'll tell you honestly where rail works for your trip and where it doesn't.

Are small-group tours more responsible?

They can be. Shared transport, local leaders and smaller, locally run hotels usually mean a lighter footprint than large coach tours, and more of your money reaching local people. It depends on the operator, so ask us what we know about any tour you're considering.

How can I make sure a wildlife experience is ethical?

Choose experiences that watch animals in the wild with licensed guides, and avoid rides, handling, performances and photos with captive animals. Genuine sanctuaries don't breed animals for visitors or let you touch them. If you're unsure about an activity, ask us before you book.

Does travelling off-season really help?

Yes. Spreading visits across the year eases pressure on crowded places and keeps local people in work outside the peak months. It's usually cheaper and quieter for you too, and our Travel Designers can suggest the best shoulder-season dates for your destination.
