Self-Guided Walking Holidays in Europe: Cotswolds to Cinque Terre

In this story

Self-guided walking is the holiday for people who like company but not a crowd, adventure but not getting lost, and a good dinner without having to carry it up a hill. You walk at your own pace, with route notes or a navigation app in your pocket; your luggage is moved on to the next hotel; and at the end of the day there’s a hot shower, a cold drink and nobody telling you what time breakfast is. It’s the walking equivalent of having your cake and eating it, preferably in a Cotswold tea room.

This guide compares our self-guided walking holidays in Europe, from gentle strolls between honey-stone villages to proper Alpine passes, with how hard each one is and its honest drawback.

How self-guided walking works

No group, no guide. You walk alone, as a couple or with friends, on your own dates.

Routes in your pocket. Detailed route notes and maps, or a navigation app with GPS, depending on the trip.

Luggage moved for you on the point-to-point routes, so you carry only a day pack. On the single-base trips, you simply unpack once.

Help on call. Most trips have local support or an emergency number if anything goes wrong.

The honest catch. You need to be comfortable reading a map or following an app, and there’s nobody to carry you to the pub if your knees give up.

By difficulty. Gentle: the Cotswolds, the Costa Brava and Gozo. Moderate: the Cinque Terre, Amalfi, Madeira, Kerry, Bavaria and Austria. Challenging: the Bernese Highlights.

By style. Point to point with luggage moved: the Cotswolds, Madeira, Kerry, the Costa Brava and the Bernese routes. One base: the Cinque Terre, Amalfi, Bavaria, Austria and Gozo.

By meals. The Cinque Terre and Amalfi include breakfast and dinner daily; most others include breakfast only.

When to go

Spring and autumn are perfect for the Mediterranean routes, which are hot in midsummer. The Alpine walks are best from about June to September, when the passes are clear of snow. The Cotswolds, Kerry and Madeira work for much of the year. Self-guided trips start on many dates, shown on each tour page.

Some places charge a local tourist tax, paid at the hotel; where a tour doesn’t include it, the tour page says so. Check the FCDO travel advice for your destination before you travel.
