New Zealand Escorted Tours Compared: North Island, South Island or Both?

In this story

New Zealand is the place every other country’s scenery secretly measures itself against. Fjords, glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, beaches that look photoshopped and a population of sheep that has the good manners to stay in the background of your photos. It is also a long way from home: roughly 24 hours of flying, which is exactly why most people want to see as much as possible once they get there, and why the choice of tour matters more than usual.

This guide compares every tour on our New Zealand tours page, from three-week grand tours of both islands to a four-day ride along a former railway line. The big questions are simple: how long, how big a group, how much walking, and do you want the flights included? We answer each one, along with the honest drawback of every tour.

Eighteen days with a tour leader and six to 14 travellers. You cruise to the volcanic island of Rangitoto, explore Rotorua, and have a free day in Tongariro National Park for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, often called the best day walk in the country. In the South Island you walk a section of the Abel Tasman coast, see the Pancake Rocks, walk to Fox Glacier, take a jetboat in Mount Aspiring National Park, spend a night on Milford Sound and trek the Hooker Valley below Aoraki Mount Cook.

Suits: active travellers who’d rather walk to the view than drive past it. The honest drawback: some nights are in motels, only a lunch and two dinners are included, and departures are few.

How to choose

By time. Under ten days: the South Island Express, the North Island trip, Fiordland and the Otago trail, perfect as add-ons. Seventeen to 20 days: Untamed, Discover, Luxury, Explorer and the solo trip. Three weeks or more: Land of the Long White Cloud, the Singapore tour, Ultimate New Zealand and the Grand Tour with Australia.

By budget. The hostel trips are by far the cheapest. Among the grand tours, Untamed, Ultimate and Discover sit lower, and Luxury, the flights-included tours and the solo trip sit higher, though those with flights include the airfare. Live prices are in the table above.

By fitness. Most tours are rated low. Untamed, Discover and the Fiordland walk are rated medium.

By travel style. A coach and tour director on Untamed, Land of the Long White Cloud and the Singapore tour; a private vehicle with a leader on the small-group trips; hostels on the budget trips.

When to go

New Zealand’s seasons are the reverse of ours. The southern summer, December to February, brings long days and the busiest roads; spring (October and November) and autumn (March and April) are milder and quieter, with blossom and lupins in spring and golden poplars in Central Otago in autumn. Most of these tours run from October to April. The months for each tour are in its fact panel above.

Before you travel, check the FCDO travel advice for New Zealand. Most UK visitors need an NZeTA (electronic travel authority) before they fly.
