Tour overview

This 8-day escorted tour travels the length of Germany during Advent, visiting some of the country's oldest and most famous Christmas markets. You travel by comfortable coach with a tour director throughout and local experts in the main cities, and several days have a relaxed start. You stay seven nights in well-located hotels: two at the DoubleTree by Hilton Berlin Ku'damm, two at the Hilton Dresden, one at the Park Plaza in Nuremberg and two at the Munich Marriott. Seven breakfasts and three dinners are included, along with a light welcome dinner in Berlin and a festive dinner with wine in Munich, plus airport transfers in Berlin and Munich.

In Berlin a local expert shows you the Brandenburg Gate, the State Opera House, remnants of the Berlin Wall, Unter den Linden and the restored Reichstag, with time to browse the city's many markets, from Gendarmenmarkt to Charlottenburg Palace. Heading south, you stop in Leipzig to visit Bach's Thomaskirche and its medieval market square, known for its music and culinary delights.

Two nights in Dresden give you time for the Striezelmarkt, which dates back to 1434, and a guided tour past the Procession of the Dukes mosaic, the cathedral, the Semper Opera House and the Zwinger Palace, with the rebuilt Frauenkirche at its heart. In Nuremberg, the stalls of the famous Christkindlesmarkt are dressed in red and white cloth beneath ancient ramparts and watchtowers, and you can try the city's gingerbread and little grilled sausages.

You then cross the heart of Germany to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, before reaching Munich. A local expert reveals Munich's Advent traditions in the quieter streets beyond the Marienplatz market, before a festive farewell dinner with wine.

The physical rating is low, with walking on cobbles in winter weather. This tour suits travellers who want the classic German Christmas market experience, with history, music and food along the way. Expect mulled wine, gingerbread, roasted chestnuts and handmade decorations at every stop, with old towns twinkling with lights after dark. Relaxed starts on several mornings keep the pace comfortable.
