Walking & Hiking Jordan: Petra, Dana & Wadi Rum – 7 Days
Hike Wadi Shueib, Dana and Petra's back trail, then a desert camp night in Wadi Rum, with upmarket hotels and a group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 7-day small-group walking holiday explores Jordan on foot, from the green valleys near As-Salt to the canyons of Dana and the rose-red city of Petra, with comfortable hotels and a desert camp between hikes. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader and local walking guides. You stay six nights: two at the InterContinental in Amman, one at the Mövenpick on the Dead Sea, two at Petra Moon Hotel and one at Saraya Rum Camp, where tents have air-conditioning and private en-suite bathrooms. Six breakfasts, two lunches and four dinners are included, starting with a welcome dinner at Fakhr El-Din in Amman.
Your first hike follows Wadi Shueib, a Neolithic valley of ochre hills and surprisingly lush vegetation, to the Ottoman town of As-Salt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you share a traditional lunch with a local host and walk the Harmony Trail. A local-led walk along the Zara cliffs ends with sunset over the Dead Sea. Next day you tour the Crusader stronghold of Kerak Castle, then hike from the Dana Biosphere Reserve down towards Feynan on the Rummana Mountain trail.

In Petra you take the quieter route in, starting at Little Petra and following the back trail to the Monastery before descending through the ancient city to the Treasury. On a second day you climb the stone steps of the Al Madras trail to the High Place of Sacrifice, with views across the tombs and theatres below. A 4×4 drive takes you into Wadi Rum for a sunset ceremony on the dunes with local wine and a night at Saraya Rum Camp. On the way back to Amman you walk through Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere.
The physical rating is medium. Hikes range from about two to six hours, covering up to 12km with up to 375m of ascent, on rocky paths that can be steep and dusty in places.
This trip suits regular walkers who want to see Jordan's great sights at walking pace, with good food and comfortable beds at the end of each day. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking.
