Bosnia & Herzegovina: Sarajevo, Mostar & Mountain Villages – 7 Days
A round trip from Sarajevo to Jajce, Mostar and the Herzegovina countryside, with a hike to Lukomir and home-cooked meals, in a small group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 7-day small-group trip is a round trip from Sarajevo through the mountains, rivers and old towns of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav history meet. Groups have no more than 12 travellers, with a local leader throughout. You travel by public bus and private vehicle and stay mostly in hotels, with one night in a mountain guesthouse. The trip is land-only, starting and ending in Sarajevo.
It begins with a welcome dinner in the hills above Sarajevo, where a local family shows you how to make burek, the Bosnian filled pastry, before a homemade meal. Next day a public bus takes you to Jajce, a small town where the founding session of post-war Yugoslavia took place in 1943. A local guide takes you to the AVNOJ Museum and the 22-metre Pliva Waterfall in the middle of town, and the 14th-century fortress has views over the valley.

Heading south, you stop near Livno and take a 4WD up Cincar Mountain in search of the wild horses that roam its foothills. There are several hundred of them, descended from working horses released decades ago. In Mostar, a guided walk explores the Stari Most, the rebuilt Old Bridge and a symbol of reconciliation, and a local craft workshop.
A day in Herzegovina takes in Blagaj Tekke, a 16th-century dervish monastery at the foot of a cliff above the source of the Buna River. In Stolac, a family that keeps an old fig-cake tradition alive serves coffee and cake in a historic house. You finish with a short walk to the cascades of Kravica Waterfall, where you can swim in summer.
In the Bjelašnica mountains, a circular hike from Umoljani leads to Lukomir, the highest and most remote village in the country, at almost 1,500 metres, home to around 15 people. Lunch of homemade cheeses and pies is served in a village house. The trip ends back in Sarajevo with a guided tour of the Baščaršija bazaar, a visit to a traditional coppersmith's workshop and a Bosnian coffee demonstration.
The physical rating is medium, with hikes on hilly ground and some long travel days. It suits curious travellers who enjoy food, local stories and walking, and who want to understand the Balkans beyond the headlines.
