National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions

The original expedition cruise pioneer, in collaboration with National Geographic since 2004

Lars-Eric Lindblad invented commercial expedition cruising — Antarctica in 1966 and the Galápagos in 1967, the first private citizens ever to reach either. His son Sven has run the company since 1979, partnering with the National Geographic Society since 2004. Today: 23 ships, 100+ itineraries on all 7 continents and 70+ countries, with the world's most advanced fleet of expedition vessels. Single-use-plastic free, carbon-neutral, with onboard National Geographic Photography Experts, certified photo instructors, undersea specialists and a dedicated kids' Global Explorers programme.

Why book National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions

Why a National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

The original expedition operator — and still the gold standard

Lindblad invented this category. They were first to Antarctica (1966) and first to the Galápagos (1967) and have been pioneering remote-region cruising for nearly 60 years. The infrastructure they've built — local relationships, permits, science partnerships, expert teams — is the deepest in the industry.

National Geographic Photography Experts onboard

Every NG-Lindblad polar voyage carries a National Geographic Photography Expert (NG Endurance, Resolution, Explorer, Orion) — a working NG photographer. Daily image reviews, technical workshops, optional shore-side instruction. Every ship also carries a certified photo instructor. The on-loan OM System Photo Gear Locker provides cameras and lenses for guests to try out.

Truly all-inclusive on polar ships

On NG Endurance, Resolution, Explorer, Orion (the polar fleet) plus Sea Cloud, Sea Cloud II, Lord of the Glens, Oberoi Philae, Sun Goddess and The Jahan: ALL drinks (beer, wine, cocktails, spirits) and crew gratuities are included in the fare. Plus Starlink Wi-Fi, all activities (kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, Zodiac), and shore excursions. Galápagos and US-coastal ships have a smaller inclusion package.

A ship for every region

Lindblad operates the most varied fleet in the industry — polar ice-class expedition vessels (NG Endurance, NG Resolution), Galápagos-specific small ships, sailing ships (Sea Cloud, Sea Cloud II), Amazon riverboats (Delfin II), Mekong/Burma river vessels (The Jahan, Sun Goddess), Scottish lochs (Lord of the Glens), Nile dahabiyas (Oberoi Philae), Alaska coastal small ships. Each is purpose-designed for its destination — not a one-ship-fits-all approach.

Global Explorers — the kids' programme

Family-friendly with a dedicated National Geographic Global Explorers programme for children: field journals, photography lessons designed for under-18s, "young naturalist" certification. One of the few expedition operators that genuinely accommodates families with kids 7-16 — and explicitly markets to them.

Group savings + group sizes from 8

5% discount when 8+ guests travel together (a country club, photo society, family reunion, school group). One-on-one assistance from Lindblad's in-house group team. No tour leader fee, no minimum-cabin requirement, no special arrangements — just a published discount.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You're looking for an ultra-luxury cruise

NG-Lindblad ships are very comfortable but not luxury-hotel — there's no butler service, no marble bathrooms, no formal-night dressing-up. The atmosphere is informal expedition style. For ultra-luxury polar look at Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot or Silversea's Silver Endeavour.

You want big-ship onboard variety

Even the largest NG-Lindblad ships (Endurance, Resolution at 126 guests) are small expedition vessels — single restaurant, lecture lounge, observation deck, library. No theatre, no casino, no spa-resort scale. The voyage IS the entertainment.

You expect free cancellation

Lindblad operates a fairly traditional cancellation policy with escalating penalties as departure approaches. Outside the cancellation penalty window any deposit is refundable; closer to departure a percentage applies. Travel protection plan is strongly recommended and bookable at deposit.

You want to skip ports for sea-day relaxation

Expedition cruising is intensely active — daily landings, daily Zodiac cruises, daily wildlife exploration, often before breakfast and after dinner. The pace is full-on. If you want relaxed sea-day variety with optional port-day exploration, choose Celebrity, HAL or a mainstream brand.

FAQ

Quick answers about National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions

What does the National Geographic partnership actually mean?
Since 2004 the National Geographic Society and Lindblad have operated jointly on these voyages. Practically, that means: National Geographic Photography Experts (working NG photographers) join select voyages; National Geographic Experts (archaeologists, ornithologists, anthropologists, etc.) join select voyages as guest lecturers; the LEX-NG Fund supports global conservation, science and education projects; NG Global Explorers programme for kids was co-designed; OM System (Olympus) photography partnership; NG-branded ships in the fleet. It's a genuine operating partnership, not a marketing licence.
Which NG-Lindblad ship should I pick?
NG Endurance or Resolution for polar (Antarctic, Arctic, Northwest Passage) — both 126-guest polar ice-class with infinity hot tubs, glass igloo viewing pods, NG Photography Expert. NG Explorer or Orion for traditional polar at slightly lower price point. NG Endeavour II or Islander II for Galápagos. Sea Cloud or Sea Cloud II for Mediterranean classic-sailing voyages. Delfin II for Upper Amazon, The Jahan for Mekong, Oberoi Philae for Nile, Lord of the Glens for Scottish lochs. NG Sea Bird, Sea Lion, Quest, Venture for Alaska, Pacific NW, Baja California.
Are drinks really all included on the polar ships?
Yes — on NG Endurance, Resolution, Explorer and Orion, all beer, wine, cocktails and spirits are included from boarding to disembarkation in all bars and restaurants. Same on Sea Cloud, Sea Cloud II, Lord of the Glens, The Jahan, Oberoi Philae and Sun Goddess. Premium wines and liquors (top-tier spirits, vintage wines) are available for purchase. On Galápagos and US-coastal ships, beer and wine with meals is included; full bar is à la carte.
How expensive is NG-Lindblad?
Per-night prices are upper-premium to ultra-luxury depending on ship. Antarctic voyages typically start around £12,000pp for an 11-night sailing in a Solo or Category 1 cabin on NG Endurance/Resolution, ascending to £40,000pp+ for a National Geographic Suite or extended Patagonia + Falklands + South Georgia voyage. Galápagos voyages on NG Endeavour II from around £6,500pp for 7 nights. Sea Cloud Mediterranean from £5,500pp for 7-10 nights. All include daily excursions, drinks (polar fleet), gratuities (polar fleet) and most equipment — the all-in cost is more competitive than headline price suggests.
How is NG-Lindblad different from Quark Expeditions or HX Expeditions?
Quark is a polar-specialist with deeper polar-only fleet (Ultramarine has helicopters); HX is a polar/Norwegian-coast hybrid descended from Hurtigruten. NG-Lindblad is global (7 continents, 23 ships), with the National Geographic editorial partnership and more developed photography / undersea / science programmes. Pricing is broadly comparable to Quark; HX is generally a tier lower in price. Choose Quark for helicopters and a polar-only focus; HX for value polar; NG-Lindblad for the most varied global itinerary range and NG editorial overlay.
Is there a kids' programme?
Yes — the National Geographic Global Explorers programme operates on most family-suitable voyages (Galápagos, Alaska, Costa Rica, Caribbean, Mediterranean sailing voyages) and on selected polar voyages. Field journals, age-appropriate photography sessions, kids' Zodiac cruises, "young naturalist" certification. Children 7-18 welcome. NG-Lindblad is one of the few genuine expedition lines that markets to multi-generational families.
What's the loyalty programme?
Lindblad offers a 10% returning-guest discount on most future voyages from your second voyage onward. Plus priority booking access to new-season releases, exclusive returning-guest itineraries (occasional, small-group), and personal recognition onboard by expedition leader and captain. Less points-based than competitors; more relationship-based recognition.
How do I book NG-Lindblad through Travelisto?
Tell a Travel Designer the region (polar, Galápagos, Amazon, Nile, Mekong, Scotland, Alaska, Mediterranean) and rough dates. We come back with ship-specific recommendations, cabin categories, current promotion fares (NG often runs early-booking and shoulder-season savings), pre/post-extension options, suggested flights and a complete ABTA/ATOL-protected package. Polar peak (Dec-Feb) and Galápagos year-round typically book 12-18 months ahead.
