Why book Antarctica21

Why a Antarctica21 voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

Skip the Drake Passage entirely

Antarctica21 invented the Antarctic Air-Cruise. A two-hour BAE 146 flight from Punta Arenas to Frei Station on King George Island lands you in Antarctica directly. No 36-48 hour Drake Passage crossing each way. Saves up to four days at sea and removes the single most common reason travellers avoid Antarctica.

Truly small ships — 69 to 100 guests

Magellan Explorer carries just 100 guests; Hebridean Sky 100; Ocean Nova 69. By far the smallest expedition fleet sailing Antarctica — meaning more zodiac landings per day, closer wildlife encounters and a community-feel on board.

Daily zodiac landings

On most days you'll make two zodiac landings — penguin rookeries, research stations, sheltered bays, fur-seal beaches. Optional sea-kayaking, snowshoeing, camping ashore and stand-up paddleboard on select expeditions.

Full expedition team aboard

Each voyage carries naturalists, glaciologists, photographers, ornithologists and Antarctic historians. Daily lectures, on-deck wildlife spotting, photography masterclasses. Genuine expedition science, not lecture-cruise theatre.

All-inclusive expedition format

Every Antarctica21 fare includes the Punta Arenas hotel stay before and after, the charter flights to and from King George Island, all meals on board, soft drinks and house wine at lunch and dinner, all zodiac landings and lectures, polar parka to keep, expedition boots loan, and gratuities.

Antarctic specialists since 2003

Founded in Punta Arenas in 2003 by Chilean entrepreneur Tomás Holik, Antarctica21 has run the Antarctic Air-Cruise format longer than any other operator. The expedition staff are mostly returning Antarctic-season specialists.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Antarctica21 might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want a big cruise ship

Antarctica21 ships carry 69-100 guests — boutique expedition scale. No theatre productions, no waterparks, no formal nights, no casinos. The ship is for sleeping, eating and lecture-listening; the Antarctic is the entertainment.

You want the cheapest Antarctic option

Air-Cruise is a premium product — the charter flights add significant cost over traditional ship-only Antarctic voyages from Ushuaia. Compare Antarctica21's 6-night Air-Cruise to a 10-12 night ship-only voyage on Hurtigruten Expeditions, Quark or HX.

You're travelling with young kids

Antarctica21 has age minimums of 8+ on most voyages, with specific physical fitness requirements (zodiac transfers, polar conditions). Not suitable for under-8s, and the adult atmosphere isn't family-themed.

You want classic resort cruising in Antarctic regions

This is expedition cruising — small ships, ice-strengthened hulls, daily zodiac operations, lecture programmes, polar weather. If you want gentler Antarctic Peninsula sailing with a larger ship and resort-style amenities, look at Silversea Expedition or Seabourn Venture.

On board

What you actually do all day

The Antarctic outside your window

Penguin rookeries, leopard seal cruises, humpback whale encounters, blue-tinted icebergs, glacier calving, historic research stations, abandoned whaling sites. The expedition voyage is built around outside time — most days have two zodiac landings or cruises.

Bridge open to guests

Antarctica21 maintains an open-bridge policy — guests are welcome to spend time with the officers, see the charting and navigation, ask questions. Genuine working bridge access that is rare on larger expedition lines.

Optional adventure add-ons

Sea-kayaking (Antarctic kayaking with experienced guides), snowshoe excursions, snowboard descents on virgin slopes, polar camping for one overnight on the continent. Bookable in advance, weather-and-conditions permitting on the day.

Library, lecture room and observation lounges

Quiet onboard spaces for processing the day — a substantial polar library, a multi-purpose lecture room, panoramic observation lounges. Cabins are simple but warm with desk space for journaling and photo editing.

Practical

Good to know

Minimum age
Most voyages 8+. Activity-intensive itineraries (camping, kayaking, snowshoeing) often have minimum age 14-16. Maximum age guideline is fitness-based, not numeric.
Drinking age
18+ (Chilean rules apply on flights and at the Punta Arenas hotel).
Voyage length
6-night Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise (the most popular product) to 14-night Antarctic Photography Expedition. South Georgia voyages reach 17-21 nights with a ship-only sea-day component.
Dress code
Genuinely no dress code. Practical polar layers during the day; smart-casual at the Captain's farewell dinner is appreciated but not required. Most guests live in fleeces and waterproof trousers.
Gratuities
INCLUDED in the cruise fare — no separate per-day charge added on board. Optional voluntary tipping for expedition team welcome but not expected.
Polar gear
Polar parka included free to keep; expedition-grade rubber boots provided on loan for the duration. You bring base and mid-layers, waterproof trousers, gloves, hat, sunglasses and seasickness medication.
Wi-Fi
Per-cruise satellite Wi-Fi packages available — Antarctic regions are bandwidth-limited so this is messaging, not streaming. Use sparingly.
Currency on board
US dollars on every Antarctica21 ship and at the Punta Arenas hotel. Cashless onboard accounts settled at end of voyage.
FAQ

Quick answers about Antarctica21

What is the Antarctic Air-Cruise format?
You fly two hours from Punta Arenas (Chile) to Frei Station on King George Island in Antarctica, then board your expedition ship at the airstrip. At the end of the voyage you reverse the process. This skips the rough Drake Passage entirely — the 36-48 hour crossing that most Antarctic ship-only voyages do twice per trip. Saves up to four days at sea and removes the seasickness barrier.
How small are the Antarctica21 ships?
Magellan Explorer carries 100 guests; Hebridean Sky 100; Ocean Nova 69. These are true expedition-scale ships — by comparison, Silversea Expedition's Antarctic ships carry 144 guests, Seabourn Venture 264, and traditional Antarctic operators like Hurtigruten Expeditions sail 500+ guest ships in the region. Antarctica21's scale means more zodiac landings per day and closer wildlife encounters.
What's included in the fare?
A genuinely comprehensive package: pre- and post-voyage hotel nights in Punta Arenas, the BAE 146 charter flights to and from King George Island, all meals on board, soft drinks and house wines at lunch and dinner, all zodiac landings, lectures and expedition activities, polar parka (yours to keep), expedition boots on loan, and gratuities. Excluded: international flights to Punta Arenas, optional adventure add-ons (kayaking, camping, snowshoeing), premium drinks, satellite Wi-Fi.
How does Antarctica21 compare to other Antarctic operators?
Antarctica21 invented the Air-Cruise format and remains the specialist. Compared to Silversea Expedition's Air Cruise (now also offered), Antarctica21's ships are smaller and the expedition feel is purer; Silversea adds luxury butler-service polish. Compared to Hurtigruten Expeditions, HX, Quark, or Lindblad-National Geographic — those operate larger ship-only voyages from Ushuaia with the Drake Passage included. The Air-Cruise removes the Drake but costs more per day.
Are gratuities included?
Yes — gratuities for the expedition team and ship crew are included in the cruise fare. There's no separate daily per-guest charge added on board. Voluntary tipping for exceptional service is welcome but not expected.
How does the weather affect the itinerary?
Antarctica weather is the boss. Antarctica21 publishes a target itinerary but the on-board expedition team adjusts daily based on ice, wind, swell and wildlife concentrations. You'll typically make two zodiac landings or cruises per day weather permitting, but a planned landing might shift to a different bay. The charter flight to Punta Arenas is also weather-dependent — Antarctica21 builds buffer days into the front and back of every itinerary for delays.
What if my flight to King George Island gets cancelled?
Antarctica21 builds buffer days into every Air-Cruise to handle weather delays at Frei Station (the Antarctic airstrip). If your flight is delayed, you stay in the Punta Arenas hotel at no extra cost until conditions allow take-off. If flights cannot operate at all for a voyage, Antarctica21 offers a full refund or rebooking. The operator has run this format since 2003 and has well-rehearsed contingency procedures.
How do I actually book one of these?
These voyages are not on our live booking platform because Antarctica21 isn't on the Widgety operator network — but every sailing is bookable through us directly. We hold a direct relationship with Antarctica21 in Punta Arenas. Tell a Travel Designer which itinerary appeals (or describe what you want) and we'll come back with current availability, exact pricing and ABTA/ATOL-protected booking. Departures are limited and the Air-Cruise sells out far in advance — book 12-18 months ahead for popular dates.
