Marriott’s design-led EDITION brand is finally coming to Africa. The Cape Town EDITION hotel opens on 24 November 2026 at Quay 7 on the city’s V&A Waterfront, just as the South African summer gets into its stride.
Set right on the water’s edge beside the InterContinental Table Bay, the 142-room hotel looks across the Waterfront’s new superyacht marina towards Table Mountain. That makes it a striking new base for British holidaymakers chasing winter sun.
What’s new at the Cape Town EDITION hotel
Marriott has now confirmed the opening date. The hotel occupies a slice of Cape Town’s historic working harbour, which has served as a meeting point between cultures for centuries.
The location is hard to beat, which watched the building rise during a visit last December, calls it a prime position and expects some rooms to enjoy views of Table Mountain.
Step outside and you are surrounded by museums, art galleries, restaurants and shops, with the bustle of the Waterfront on the doorstep.
Brick, light and a lookout called The Drum
Architecture practice Neri&Hu designed the hotel with Cape Town-based architects and specialist firms. The building is long and low with pitched roofs, a deliberate echo of the harbour warehouses that once stood on the site.
The façade alone is a feat. Craftspeople hand-laid upwards of six million bricks, arranging them in changing patterns that give the walls texture and depth.
The real showpiece sits at the heart of the building. The Drum is a tall cylindrical space open to the sky, letting in the Cape’s sea air and ever-changing light.
A spiral staircase winds up to an outdoor viewing platform, revealing the harbour, Table Mountain and the Atlantic as you climb. The hotel describes it as “part arrival experience, part public lookout”, and it is open to locals and visitors as well as staying guests.
Inside the rooms and suites
The 142 rooms and suites aim for the feel of a stylish private home. Highlights include:
- Bespoke furniture and natural finishes throughout, with large windows framing the views
- Built-in joinery inspired by 19th-century travel trunks
- Custom furnishings and rugs woven by Shuttleworth Weaving, based in KwaZulu-Natal, adding a layer of South African craft
- Two headline suites: a 240-square-metre Penthouse and a 112-square-metre Harbour Suite, both with generous living areas and wide panoramic outlooks
A Waterfront full of big names
The Cape Town EDITION arrives in a neighbourhood that has seen a wave of international hotel brands in recent years.
The much-loved Cape Grace is now run by Accor’s Fairmont, while the former Table Bay Hotel has reopened after a refurbishment as an InterContinental. A Radisson RED has appeared close by, and the old Radisson Blu has been fully refurbished and relaunched as the Radisson Collection, Waterfront.
Some favourites remain independent. The Victoria & Alfred Hotel belongs to the local Newmark group, The Silo is unbranded, and the One&Only operates as an urban resort with rooms, a pool and a spa on its own island.
It is likely that the One&Only and The Silo to give the newcomer stiff competition. For travellers, that rivalry simply means more choice and higher standards along the water.
Why it matters for UK travellers
Cape Town is a natural choice for British travellers chasing winter sun. Summer weather arrives from November, and the time difference with the UK is only an hour or two, so there is no jet lag to shake off.
With a late-November opening, the first guests will check in at the start of the season. If you want to be among them, especially over the festive weeks, it pays to plan early.
A few nights on the Waterfront also pair naturally with the wider Western Cape. Many visitors add time in the Cape Winelands for long lunches and tastings, or continue east along the Garden Route for coastal towns, beaches and scenic drives.
