"mesothelioma lawyer" - Jury Finds Chrysotile Asbestos Causes Rare Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Jury Finds Chrysotile Asbestos Causes Rare Peritoneal Mesothelioma
A jury awarded over $1.9 million to a 71-year-old retired sheet metal worker, Genaro Garcia, who developed peritoneal mesothelioma from his prior on-the-job exposure to asbestos (Genaro Garcia and Dalia Garcia v. Duro Dyne Corporation, SF Superior Court, #418098). Peritoneal mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that first attacks the membranes lining the stomach. This fatal disease is almost always caused by asbestos exposure.......

Cancer Research Studies Sisters
Donna and Gail Castlebury were inseparable. Only three years apart, the sisters were often confused for twins. They moved across the country together, from Massachusetts to New York to Los Angeles, pursuing their dreams, Donna as a dancer, Gail as an actress. But that all changed in October 2001 when Gail was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Castlebury became destined for a study of the disease that would begin six years later. "I would have given up my life for her," Castlebury said, her calm voice beginning to tremble. At every doctor's appointment and every treatment session, Donna was beside her sister. "She would look to me to be strong for her, to give her answers. It broke my heart I couldn't do more."...

Wbr vs Gamma Knife Focal Radiation
My father has small cell lung cancer and we had 6 cycle of chemo and radiation therapy 3 months ago. However, we found one abnormal spot on his left central brainMRI on 10/31. His oncologist can not concluded whether it is infection or cancer. We just have another MRI yesterday and found that this abnormal spot has grown from 6mm x 5mm to 8mm x 8mm. In addition, there is another abnormal spot now found on the back toward right head (3mm x 3mm). We are very concerned and disappointed especially his oncologist said that the disease has no cure once it mets to the brain. His oncologist suggested Whole Brain Radiation and not focal radiation like Gamma Knife. I believe WBR has more side effects than Gamma Knife. However, I do not understand w...

A New Target For The Treatment Of Breast Cancer
BERKELEY, Calif. -- The active ingredient in a drug currently being tested to treat rheumatoid arthritis might also one day serve as an effective means of treating one of the deadliest forms of breast cancer. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated that inhibiting the activity of the protease enzyme known as TACE can deprive tumor cells of a key factor needed for their proliferation. TACE is strongly present in a form of breast cancer which responds poorly to current therapies. "We have shown that inhibition of the TACE protease in breast cancer cells blocks the shedding of two critical growth factor proteins and results in an inhibition of a key signaling pa...

Mesothelioma - An Unbreakable Bond For Bonnie Olein

An Unbreakable Bond For Bonnie Olein
When Bonnie Olein was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005, the Gophers women's hockey team designed rubber bracelets as a symbol of their bond with her. The players considered several words that would describe their equipment manager before settling on the perfect inscription. Unbreakable. Olein has taken that bracelet off only once, when she underwent surgery last fall for the cancer that has spread to her liver. The little blue band began a tide of kindnesses lent by the team, which has encircled her as snugly as the bracelet. Since Olein's diagnosis, the Gophers have raised more than $3,000 for cancer research in her honor while brightening her days with visits, care packages, video documentaries of road trips and other r...

Exposure to Some Rock Powder Can Cause Malignant Mesothelioma
Californians who live close to naturally occurring asbestos sources and who are exposed to low levels of the mineral are at increased risk for developing cancerous mesothelioma, a serious cancer of the membrane covering the lung, according to a new study published in the second issue of the October 2005 American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Marc B. Schenker, M.D., M.P.H., of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health, at the University of California, Davis, along with four associates, investigated 2,908 cancerous mesothelioma cases reported over a 10-year period (1988 to 1997). Over 50 percent of the men and 58 percent of the women, all of whom were listed in the California Canc......

What to do When Tarceva Stops Working?
My mom has been battling stage 4 lung cancer for almost 3 years. She is a non-smoker. She started Tarceva last January. Her recent CAT scan showed growth, so I am hoping we have other options. Any body out there that has been in this situation or know somebody who has had positive results on another drug/chemo after Tarceva?? I heard about a drug called HKI - 272. It is in a phase 2 clinical trial out of Sloan Kettering where we go. The only problem is that my mom is in a wheelchair and I think this will disquailify her from the trial. I can't understand why being in a wheelchair can limit a cancer patient from new drugs being studied. That doesn't seem fair to us.Thank youChrissy...

Hi,My Mom (83 years old, 25 year history of tobacco use, but quit 15 years ago - otherwise very health and independent) was just diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer (probably squamous cell) after nearly 8 months of chronic cough that was alternately dianosed as allergies, GERD, cough variant asthma. Her pet scan shows a tumor around her L mainstem bronchus and artery, lymph node involvement on the same side as the cancer, but no spread elswhere. THe oncologist at Dana Farber is calling it stage IIIa (or b - they would have to do a mediastinoscopy to confirm) The oncologist thinks 2 cycles of chemo, then radiation after the tumor has shrunk a bit so the field would be smaller. Soy Compound May Fight Breast, Ovarian Cancers, Says Tulane Cancer Researcher
NEW ORLEANS -- A compound produced by specially grown soy beans may prove to be successful in fighting the growth of breast and ovarian cancers, says Tulane cancer researcher Matthew Burow. Burow tested the compound, known as glyceollin, on mice with ovarian and breast cancer tumors that are stimulated by the hormone estrogen. Over time, the compound stopped further growth of the tumors by interfering with the tumor's ability to respond to estrogen. According to Burow, the finding is significant because of the lack of effective therapies available to women with advanced breast or ovarian cancer. Unlike some of the available therapies, the glyceollins did not stimulate uterine cancer growth. The results of the researc...

Imagine getting a 10-minute screening for breast cancer in a drugstore or your doctor's office. The same technology that went into the thermometer forms the basis for his Early BreasTest, developed with the input of medical specialists including Dr. Anthony Barbara, a senior surgeon at Hackensack. Exercise Can Reduce A Smoker's Lung Cancer Risk, But Quitting Smoking Is Still Most Important
In a study of more than 36,000 women, researchers observed that smokers can reduce their risk of developing lung cancer by being physically active. However, they strongly caution that any relative benefit is dwarfed by the benefits gained from quitting smoking. The researchers, from the Universities of Minnesota and Pennsylvania, report in a recent issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention that a high level of physical activity in women who smoked reduced their relative risk of developing lung cancer by 72%. Moderate activity among smokers was associated with a 65% risk reduction, and lower relative risks were also seen in former smokers who had moderate or high activity levels. While this may sound like welcome news to fem...

Stanford Links Breast Cancer To Hormone Pills
A Stanford study that shows breast cancer rates are linked to the use of hormone replacement therapy drugs mirrors the findings of a recent national study. These findings will create a "conundrum" for doctors in the coming year as women suffering from menopausal symptoms, including fatigue and memory loss, seek safe treatments, according to the Stanford University School of Medicine. Christina Clarke, a Northern California Cancer Center epidemiologist who worked on the Stanford study, expects future studies will only strengthen the reported hormone-cancer link, which has prompted women across the nation to stop taking the drugs. Some of those same women are teaming with attorneys working on class-action lawsuits against pharma...

An Overall Healthy Eating Plan
BROCCOLI, SPROUTS AND KALE Researchers at the University of Leicester found that cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, sprouts and kale, contain a compound which could help to fight breast cancer. Margaret Manson, the study's author, found that after supplementation with the compound Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C), breast cancer cells were more easily killed when exposed to chemotherapy. Eating cruciferous vegetables once a week can also cut lung cancer risk for people with inactive forms of two genes, says the International Agency for Cancer Research, because they are rich in isothiocyanates. But these chemicals are normally eliminated from the body by "clean-up" enzymes produced by the genes GSTM1 and GSTT1. The...

The Elves Of Christmas Present - Repairs, Gifts Assist Cancer Victim
The second thing Charlie Brison thought about, when his doctors diagnosed his lung cancer, was the list of repairs he needed to do for his family, before... The ultimate "honey-do" list, by a dad with a deadline. For Kalli, his 17-year-old daughter, he needed to fix her car, which had had been parked in the driveway for months, its engine shot. For Jessie, his 13-year-old-daughter, he needed to fix the part of her computer that had fried out, rendering it blind and mute. And the family's only bathroom had leaked for the past 10 years, a slow drip that had eaten away sheet rock, mushed up the floor and the ceiling. The bathroom was its own ecosystem for several kinds of mold and probably a few that scientists haven't discovered y...
