Day By Day - How A Cancer Grows
Women with certain types of breast cancer may be able to avoid a mastectomy in the future, following a major breakthrough by a Scottish scientist in harnessing mathematics as a forecasting tool in the treatment of tumors. Dr. Sandy Anderson, a senior lecturer in the division of mathematics at Dundee University, has developed a mathematical model which predicts how tumors will grow. His pioneering research is poised to lead to a "new era" in treatment for a range of cancers, including tumors in the breast, lung and liver--three of Scotland's major killers--allowing clinicians to tailor therapies to individual patients. Allowing doctors to predict how tumors will develop should save patients with less aggressive tum...

Lung Cancer Survival Improved With Smoking Cessation
Survival in early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients was improved with smoking cessation. According to a study from the United States, "Smoking cessation decreases the risk of lung cancer. However, little is known about how smoking cessation affects lung cancer survival." "We examined the association between smoking cessation and overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in 543 early stage NSCLC patients," explained W. Zhou and colleagues, Harvard University. "The data were analyzed using log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard models, adjusting for age, gender, stage, and smoking intensity. The median follow-up time was 57 months (range 0.2-140 months). "There were 191 recurrences and 285 deaths. Th...

EATONTON, Ga. -- Once executive director of a Macon music festival, Ernest Rogers is again preparing for a show. After dropping out of college years ago, the 50-year-old has gone back to school at Georgia College & State University. Research Shows Exercise Helps Patients With Cancer
BACKGROUND A review of the research provides support that exercise is beneficial to patients with cancer in a multitude of ways, both physically and psychologically. McTiernan, Gralow, and Talbott indicate that not only does exercise decrease the risk for cancer, but it can also reduce cancer-promoting growth factors in breast cancer patients. Other research has indicated that exercise may simply make people with cancer 'feel better.' In an article by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the benefits of exercise were documented to include reduction of symptoms, such as weakness, loss of balance, fatigue, stiff joints, weight loss/ gain, problems sleeping, and restlessness. Ex-Sonics Strength Coach Pushes Back Against Cancer
Before the cancer, players used to tease Daniel Shapiro about his raspy voice. They would imitate him, some sounding like Louis Armstrong, others like Dick Vitale in the finals days of March Madness. It was part of the give-and-take of the Sacramento Kings' workout sessions. And Shapiro took the kidding in the spirit it was intended. He was used to it. For as long as he could remember his voice was as abrasive as 60-grit sandpaper, so he wasn't overly alarmed at the end of last season, his first-full year as the Kings' head strength and conditioning coach, when the scratchiness worsened. Most strength coaches yell a lot, and Shapiro, a former Sonic assistant strength and conditioning coach and Seattle Pacific graduate,...

'Tis Better To Give. . .
Santa Claus has cancer. It started in his esophagus and spread to his liver. He's being treated, but chemotherapy has sapped his appetite and energy; he's down about a hundred pounds. He's worried about money, too. The treatment costs more than $16,000 a month, and his insurance doesn't cover it. Santa Claus is named Larry Stewart, and he's a wealthy 58-year-old businessman who lives in Kansas City, but he used to be a down-on-his-luck 20-something living out of his car. How did he become Santa Claus? Well, it might have begun that day he approached a woman at a church and told her he was destitute. She told him that the man who handled destitute people was gone for the day and suggested that he come back tomorrow. Stewart says he nev...

Cancer Battle A Journey For Bell

The front door stood open, allowing a cool breeze to find its way into Buddy Bell's home, over the wood floor and leather chairs and dark wooden tables, to where he sat, a strong smell of coffee in the air, his handsome but worn face looking up without expression. The way a cowboy might look. The scar was hidden from view. You'd hardly know how weak throat cancer had made him. "I never really thought I'd be comfortable talking about this," Bell said in a deep voice, still feeling the effects from his September surgery. "I don't know. It's kind of personal."...

Gene Blocks Prostate Cancer Growth
PHILADELPHIA -- U.S. cancer scientists say they've demonstrated a gene involved in regulating aging also blocks prostate cancer cell growth. Dr. Richard Pestell and colleagues at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University say they hope the newly found connection will aid in better understanding the development of prostate cancer and lead to new drugs against the disease. The gene, SIRT1, is a member of a family of enzymes called sirtuins that have far-reaching influence in all organisms, including roles in metabolism, gene expression and aging. "We know that sirtuins play a role in aging, and that the risk for prostate cancer increases with aging, but no one has ever linked the two until now," said Pe...

Ask Dr. H: Timing Of A Follow-up Colonoscopy Depends On What Kind Of Polyp Is Found
Q: Five years ago, I had a routine colonoscopy where a small polyp was removed. My family doctor is advising me to have a follow-up colonoscopy now, but the gastroenterologist's office says that I don't need another one for five years. Who should I believe? A: Based upon the recommendation from your gastroenterologist, I'm assuming that the polyp removed was "hyperplastic." That means it was a completely benign growth of tissue, and would not have transformed into cancer if left alone to grow. In that situation, your risk of colon cancer is the same as that of the general population. The current screening guidelines recommend a routine colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50 in folks of average risk. Colon cancer does not occur...

Cancer Survivors Living Longer; That Also Adds Stress
Seven years into her bout with breast cancer, Peggy Lacey and her family are learning how to live with the disease. Her three grown sons, each with his own family, have come to terms with "the fact that mommy is not invincible," the 71-year-old said. She and her husband have grown accustomed to the trips from her Bergenfield home to a New York City hospital for chemotherapy treatments, accustomed to the tiresome aftermath. And although the cancer is in remission, Lacey has accepted that she may not see her grandchildren grow into adulthood if there is a relapse. She does not dwell on that. It Was Not The End, But It Was The Start Of A War
Ron Fickling was diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago, but is now in remission from the deadly disease. The 53-year-old, from Merthyr Tydfil, was a heavy smoker but a persistent and troublesome cough--the first indication that he was ill--persuaded him to stop. This is his story. IT STARTED fairly innocuously--a chesty cough after a summer cold, which happens to me most years. Being a smoker I realised that I would be more prone to bronchitis than a non-smoker. I went to the chemist and purchased the usual remedies and made an appointment at the doctors' for a flu jab. The remedies and the flu jab came and went, but not the cough. I then saw the doctor, who prescribed a seven-day course of antibiotics, but stil...

Chemotherapy Ages Man With Cancer, But He Rediscovers Something From His Youth
EATONTON, Ga. -- Once executive director of a Macon music festival, Ernest Rogers is again preparing for a show. After dropping out of college years ago, the 50-year-old has gone back to school at Georgia College & State University. As part of his anthropology minor, he's putting on a musical event Wednesday that teaches the importance of drums in different cultures and throughout history. But where he is now, he said, can't be explained without remembering where he has been. Four years ago, Rogers was diagnosed with a rare tongue cancer. He had just left Macon after a stint as executive director of the Music & Heritage Festival to start his own company in Atlanta. There, his neck began to swell, with a tu...

Exposure to Some Rock Powder Can Cause Malignant Mesothelioma
Californians who live close to naturally occurring asbestos sources and who are exposed to low levels of the mineral are at increased risk for developing cancerous mesothelioma, a serious cancer of the membrane covering the lung, according to a new study published in the second issue of the October 2005 American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Marc B. Schenker, M.D., M.P.H., of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health, at the University of California, Davis, along with four associates, investigated 2,908 cancerous mesothelioma cases reported over a 10-year period (1988 to 1997). Over 50 percent of the men and 58 percent of the women, all of whom were listed in the California Canc......

What to do When Tarceva Stops Working?
My mom has been battling stage 4 lung cancer for almost 3 years. She is a non-smoker. She started Tarceva last January. Her recent CAT scan showed growth, so I am hoping we have other options. Any body out there that has been in this situation or know somebody who has had positive results on another drug/chemo after Tarceva?? I heard about a drug called HKI - 272. It is in a phase 2 clinical trial out of Sloan Kettering where we go. The only problem is that my mom is in a wheelchair and I think this will disquailify her from the trial. I can't understand why being in a wheelchair can limit a cancer patient from new drugs being studied. That doesn't seem fair to us.Thank youChrissy...

So far don't know much, but I think it is in her lower spine. Is radiation the next treatment? Does it help? She has been on Tarceva for over a year. It must not be working very well since she just went through more radiation to her brain a few months ago and now it is in the bones. Also for the first time she has to take pain meds. I know everyone here is also going through tough times too. Any insight or info would be appreciated. Thank you, Diana...

Tumor Environment Promotes Evolution
PHILADELPHIA -- The theory of evolution plays well within the environment of a cancerous tumor, researchers in Philadelphia said. "A tumor cell population is constantly evolving through natural selection," said Carlo Maley, an assistant professor in the Molecular and Cellular Oncogenesis Program at Wistar Institute, and senior author of the review. "The mutations that benefit the survival and reproduction of cells in a tumor are the things that drive it towards malignancy." Maley said in a news release evolution also drives a cancer cell's resistance to therapies. He said the three conditions necessary for natural selection to occur are present in a population of tumor cells. The first requirement, variation in t...

In addition to physical benefits, exercise is thought to improve m...

Cancer Battle A Journey For Bell
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The Sonoran desert blew sand sideways across the lawn, the grit fixing itself everywhere. In the distance, a ring of red mountains rose above barren land.

Scientists Spot Unknown Gene Interaction
MILAN, Italy -- Italian genetic researchers say they've made a discovery that might provide an important tool for controlling and treating breast cancer. Scientists at Milan's National Tumor Institute discovered proteins produced by the genes HER-2 and FHIT interact in a way that encourages tumor growth, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Wednesday. The researchers determined HER-2 prevents FHIT from blocking cell proliferation. Without FHIT's action, cells can multiply quickly and end up producing a tumor. "The analysis carried out for our research shows how the activity of HER-2 leads to the degradation of FHIT," Sylvie Menard, head of experimental oncology at INT, told ANSA. Medical researchers previously dete...

Cancer Treatment Centers of America - Opinions
Has anybody been recently to the CCTA? I am thinking about taking my wife there in January for lung/liver disease. I know they don't want to talk to you unless you have good insurance or lots of money. It's the results I am more interested in concerning their success with how they approach treatment. "mesothelioma lawyer" - Gene Blocks Prostate Cancer Growth

Vaccine Could See The End Of A Devastating Illness That Kills 1,100 Women Every Year
A new vaccine has opened up the possibility of a Wales without cervical cancer. As experts continue to consider whether it should be given to all young girls in a nationwide school vaccination programme, Health Editor Madeleine Brindley gets the low-down on the HPV jab. Q: What is HPV and how is it related to cervical cancer? A: HPV stands for the human papilloma virus and it is regarded as an essential factor in almost all cases of cervical cancer. It also causes genital warts. The link between the HPV and cervical cancer is stronger than the link between tobacco and lung cancer - the International Biological Study on Cervical Cancer found that HPV DNA is present in 99.7% of cervical cancers. The virus plays a...

"Mesothelioma treatment" - Lung Cancer Survival Improved With Smoking Cessation

Th...

"Although surgery continues to be the most common treatment modality for this cancer, survival rates of oral cancer patients have still not significantly improved over the last few decades. Classical diagnostic methods are still not sensitive enough in detecting completeness of surgery and assessing minimal residual disease. This study investigated the role of NF-kappaB and COX-2...

In addition to physical benefits, exercise is thought to improve m...

Laryngeal Cancer Linked To Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Smoking and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was linked to the risk of laryngeal carcinogenesis. "GERD is common in patients with laryngeal cancer. However, the role of GERD in laryngeal cancer remains controversial because of poor matching and selection of inappropriate control groups in prior studies," scientists in the United States reported. "We aimed to better understand this relationship by conducting a matched case-control study," explained M.F. Vaezi and colleagues, Vanderbilt University. "This study was based in a single tertiary care center over a 2-year period. Cases included all patients with a diagnosis of new laryngeal cancer presenting to the otolaryngology clinics. Two controls, derived from the internal medicine...

Teachers Share A Difficult Bond
They want to laugh about all the things they share, like the best friends that they are. Both teach fifth grade in the same Kansas City school. They shaved each other's head, donating their hair to Locks of Love. "I had no idea it would be such an ordeal," Liberty Bonney says, and she and Tricia Mulvaney laugh over their joint hair project that took three hours one night. But only one has cancer. And it's not the one who cries first. They'd taken a moment during a planning period at Gladstone Elementary School to talk about how they came to be two teachers together without hair. Mulvaney had promised she'd cut her hair months ago, long before they learned this fall how deeply Bonney's long-in-remiss...

Annual Low-dose CT Screening Detects Lung Cancer At Earliest Stage
Lung cancer can be detected at its very earliest stage in 85% of patients using annual low-dose CT screening, and when followed by prompt surgical removal, the 10-year survival rate is 92%. These results, to be reported in a recent New England Journal of Medicine, would dramatically decrease the number of deaths from lung cancer--the number one cause of cancer deaths among both men and women in the U.S. The study was launched by a team of researchers at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in 1993 and has expanded into an international collaboration of 38 institutions in 7 countries, the International Early Lung Cancer Action Project (I-ELCAP). The I-ELCAP study is the largest, long-term study to determine the usef...
