Lung Cancer Mortality Risk Due To Carbon Black Exposure Requires More Evidence
Research results provide little evidence of the association between lung cancer mortality risk and carbon black exposure. According to recent research from Germany, "Few studies have investigated cancer risks in carbon black workers and the findings were inconclusive. The current study explores the mortality of a cohort of 1535 male German blue-collar workers employed at a carbon black manufacturing plant for at least 1 year between 1960 and 1998. Vital status and causes of death were assessed for the period 1976-98." "Occupational histories and information on smoking were abstracted from company records," explained J. Wellmann and colleagues, University of Munster. "Standardised mortality ratios (SMR) and Poisson regression models we...

Key To Lung Cancer Chemo Resistance Found
BALTIMORE -- U.S. scientists have discovered how a "detox" gene causes chemotherapy resistance in a common form of lung cancer. Johns Hopkins University researchers say products made by a gene called NRF2 normally protect cells from environmental pollutants such as cigarette smoke by absorbing the materials and pumping them from the cell. Another gene called KEAP1 encodes products that halt the cleansing process. But lung cancer cells sabotage the expression of these same genes to block assault from chemotherapy drugs. "What we're seeing is that lung cancer cells recruit and distort NRF2 and KEAP1 expression to help tumor cells evade the toxic effects of chemotherapy," said Associate Professor Shyam Biswal, who led the c...

"Endocan and vascular endothelial growth factor mRNA expression were evaluated by semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction in tumoral and nontumoral lung tissue samples from a first series of 24 patients submitted to curative surgery. Relationships between survival, time to tumor progression, and serum levels of endocan were evaluat...

Findings From The United States And Japan Advance Knowledge In Colorectal Cancer Research
Reports from the United States and Japan highlight recent research in colorectal cancer. Study 1: Colorectal cancer is distinguished by the CpG island methylator phenotype, which means there is a need to develop a robust new marker panel to classify CIMP+ tumors. According to recent research from the United States, "Aberrant DNA methylation of CpG islands has been widely observed in human colorectal tumors and is associated with gene silencing when it occurs in promoter areas. A subset of colorectal tumors has an exceptionally high frequency of methylation of some CpG islands, leading to the suggestion of a distinct trait referred to as 'CpG island methylator phenotype', or 'CIMP'." "However, the existence of CIMP has been challeng...

/PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- A new study demonstrates that the investigational drug, phenoxodiol, may be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer through its ability to target a protein that appears to be selective for prostate cancer cells. Prostate cancer is one of the most serious and common types of cancer found in American men, killing more than 30,000 men in the U.S. every year. In a new study, a research group headed by James Morre, Ph.D., professor of medicinal chemistry at Purdue University, obtained results supporting that phenoxodiol specifically targets a protein on prostate cancer cells known as tNOX 75 alpha. The Purdue team has identified the protein, tumor-associated NADH oxidase (or tNO...

New Study Shows Three-dimensional Radiation Therapy Improves Lung Cancer Survival Rate
Modern three-dimensional radiation therapy has been proven to be more successful at curing lung cancer than older two-dimensional radiation therapy for some patients with early stage lung cancer, according to a new study in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology * Biology * Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 87% of all lung cancers diagnosed. Currently, the best treatment for stage I NSCLC is surgery or stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT), often followed by chemotherapy if the lesion was larger than 3 cm or radiotherapy and chemotherapy if the surgical margin or hilar or mediastinal nodes were positive at the time...

How Cancer Drugs Are Funded.
***I know this is off topic but as people who are suffering with this disease (actual individuals or care takers). I believe all the fact surrounding research must be taken into account.I agree that Lung Cancer is underfunded as opposed to other cnacers/diseases --- that is, if you are looking at what the Federal Government kicks in. But remember that Federal Government is a small piece of the overall research. This is pretty much true in almost every disease with the exception of AIDS. Simply put, the amount of R&D that is spent on Cancer drugs is enormous, and that is thanks to the drug companies and their shareholders who pour countless dollars into failed (yes I said failed) solutions, so that one day a successful drug will come a...

Mesothelioma - Key To Lung Cancer Chemo Resistance Found

Colorectal Cancer Progression Linked To High Pin1 Expression
Colorectal cancer progression was linked to high peptidyl prolyl cis-trans isomerase (Pin1) expression. According to a study from Japan, "Pin1 isomerizes only phosphorylated serine or threonine residues preceding proline in certain proteins and affects the protein function. Pin1 interacts with many signaling pathways, including Wnt signaling pathway that is crucial for colorectal tumorigenesis." "Pin1 promotes cyclin D1 over-expression directly or through the stabilization of beta-catenin," said J. Kuramochi and colleagues, Tokyo Medical & Dental University. "Pin1 is over-expressed in some cancers such as prostate and breast cancers. This study aimed to determine whether Pin1 plays a role in colorectal tumorigenesis through the upregu...
