Radiation Therapy Increases Survival In Certain Lung Cancer PatientsNEWSWISE Medical News, 12-Jun-2006 -- Treating certain lung cancer patients with surgery followed by radiation therapy can improve their chances of long-term survival, according to a study of more than 7,000 patients. The results, which suggest the need to reconsider radiation therapy's role in treatment, are reported today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. "Post-operative radiation therapy has failed to demonstrate a survival benefit in the past, likely because previous studies used older equipment," said Brian Lally, M.D., a radiation oncologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and lead author. "Our study, which examines the results using modern equipment, shows survival benefit in select patients." The study...

Exposure to Some Rock Powder Can Cause Malignant Mesothelioma Californians who live close to naturally occurring asbestos sources and who are exposed to low levels of the mineral are at increased risk for developing cancerous mesothelioma, a serious cancer of the membrane covering the lung, according to a new study published in the second issue of the October 2005 American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Marc B. Schenker, M.D., M.P.H., of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health, at the University of California, Davis, along with four associates, investigated 2,908 cancerous mesothelioma cases reported over a 10-year period (1988 to 1997). Over 50 percent of the men and 58 percent of the women, all of whom were listed in the California Canc......
Lung Cancer CT Screening Reviewed By Computer-aided Detection SystemBoth a computer-aided detection (CAD) system and a pathologist were necessary to completely identify all pulmonary nodules from CT images. "Our objective was to evaluate the performance of a CAD system for pulmonary nodule detection using low-dose screening CT images. One hundred fifty consecutive low-dose screening CT examinations were independently evaluated by a radiologist and a CAD pulmonary nodule detection system (R2 Technology) designed to identify nodules larger than 4 mm in maximum long-axis diameter. All discrepancies between the two techniques were reviewed by one of another two radiologists working in consensus with the initial interpreting radiologist, and a 'true' nodule count was determined," researchers in Canada reporte...
Elevated Protein Levels Linked to Mesothelioma Scientists at New York University School of Medicine and Wayne State University have found a molecule that reveals the early stages of pleural mesothelioma, a chest cancer caused by asbestos. The finding opens the way to a blood test for the disease, according to a new study published in the Oct. 13 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. An estimated 7.5 million workers in the United States have been exposed to asbestos and, according to government statistics, it remains a hazard to some 1.3 million workers in construction and building maintenance.er Registry, either had no or low occupational exposure to asbestos. ......
