Sorafenib - New Treatment For Lung Cancer
Hi,My name is Tony and my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer approximately 6 months ago. Her first line of treatment was Tarceva and we found out 3 weeks ago when her pain spiked up considerably that the Tarceva was no longer working. My mother is 49, Asian, non smoker, I thought she would be able to use Tarceva for much longer. We were in the hospital for 2 weeks and our oncologist was out at a conference. We waited and when he returned he told us the news that her cancer had spread more in her lungs. We were devastated, but Dr. Tom K. Lee didn't come home empty handed. At the conference he attended, there was news about a new medication for lung cancer patients, SORAFENIB (NEXAVAR). It is another Tyrosine Inhibitor and t...

What to do With Left Over Tarceva
Hi,My name is Tony and my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer approximately 6 months ago. Her first line of treatment was Tarceva and we found out 3 weeks ago when her pain spiked up considerably that the Tarceva was no longer working. My mother is 49, Asian, non smoker, I thought she would be able to use Tarceva for much longer. We were in the hospital for 2 weeks and our oncologist was out at a conference. We waited and when he returned he told us the news that her cancer had spread more in her lungs. We were devastated, however he gave us hope with a new medicine, SORAFENIB.The problem we have is that in our home now is one bottle of unopened Tarceva(Erlotinib). We spent approximatly 2,000 for it but it is now useless becau...

Close to Death
My 68yr old mother collapsed a little over eight weeks ago and was, that very evening and whilst still unconscious, diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, with secondaries in the brain and the lymph glands. However, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos. History of exposure to various other chemicals have been found in some of these patients, but majority of these patients have no understandable risk factors for mesothelioma........

New Haven, Conn. - Patients with lung cancer live longer when surgery is followed by radiation therapy, but only if the disease is at an advanced stage, according to a study by Yale School of Medicine researchers published this week in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The analysis of 7,465 patients found that in patients whose lung cancer had spread to the regional lymph nodes between the lungs (mediastinal), overall survival at five years was 27 percent in patients receiving surgery plus radiation therapy compared to 20 percent in patients who were treated with surgery alone. The results, which suggest the need to reconsider radiation therapy's role in treatment, are reported today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. For men under the age 55 with localized prostate cancer, external beam radiation may be an effective alternative to both conservative and more invasive treatments, according to a new study. Published in a recent issue of CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study reveals that external beam radiation therapy is as effective in younger prostate cancer patients as it is in older patients with same stage, localized disease. The study is the first to investigate the outcome of radiation in men under 55 years of age. Age remains a controversial factor in prostate cancer, with younger age at diagnosis perceived to be associated with more aggressive disease and poorer prognosis. Consequently, physicians tend to...

High Risk Of Cancer For Nonsmokers, Study Says
Researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center found a high risk of developing a variety of cancers (melanoma, head and neck, colorectal, prostate, lung and breast) among first-degree relatives (parents, siblings and children) of lung cancer patients who never smoked cigarettes. Olga Gorlova, PhD, an assistant professor in the department of epidemiology, studied 2,465 first-degree relatives of 316 lung cancer patients who were nonsmokers. She compared the results with 2,442 first-degree relatives of 318 controls who were nonsmokers and who did not have cancer. She found the following patterns and magnitude of increased risk among first-degree relatives of nonsmoking lung cancer patients: - Overall risk of cancer...

Radiation Therapy Increases Survival In Certain Lung Cancer Patients
NEWSWISE Medical News, 12-Jun-2006 -- Treating certain lung cancer patients with surgery followed by radiation therapy can improve their chances of long-term survival, according to a study of more than 7,000 patients. The results, which suggest the need to reconsider radiation therapy's role in treatment, are reported today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. "Post-operative radiation therapy has failed to demonstrate a survival benefit in the past, likely because previous studies used older equipment," said Brian Lally, M.D., a radiation oncologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and lead author. "Our study, which examines the results using modern equipment, shows survival benefit in select patients." The study...

Heart And Lung Surgeons Join Congress To Confront Surgeon Shortage
(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Karl Fontenot is a 76 year-old Marine Corps battalion leader who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and is now living an active life with his wife, son, and two grandchildren. But two years ago, Fontenot was diagnosed with lung cancer, and he needed life-saving surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his lung. Mr. Fontenot is now enjoying watching his grandsons' baseball games, but heart and lung patients in the future may not be as fortunate as Fontenot, if the predicted shortage of thoracic surgeons occurs. Medical specialists and Congress united today on Capitol Hill for a special briefing, "A Shortage of Heart and Lung Surgeons: A Crisis in Care," to confront a deadly national trend that has...

New Test For Targeted Cancer Drugs
Test Identifies Patients who Benefit from Targeted Cancer Drugs Clinical study results published at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) show that a new laboratory test has accurately identified patients who would benefit from treatment with the molecularly-targeted anti-cancer therapies gefitinib (Iressa) and erlotinib (Tarceva). The new test, called EGFRx (TM), predicted accurately for the survival of patients treated with the targeted drugs. The finding is important because the EGFRx (TM) test, which can also be applied to many emerging targeted cancer drugs, could help solve the growing problem of knowing which patients should receive costly, new treatments that can have harmful side-effects and whi...

What are the risk factors for mesothelioma?
Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70 percent to 80 percent of all cases. However, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos. History of exposure to various other chemicals have been found in some of these patients, but majority of these patients have no understandable risk factors for mesothelioma........
