Study: Genetics, Not Smoking Habits, May Be Responsible For Lung Cancer Disparities Among Races
For years, scientists have argued whether genes or smoking habits are responsible for the disparities in lung cancer rates among smokers of different ethnic backgrounds. Now, a new study suggests that genetics may help explain the racial differences long seen in the disease. In a study of more than 180,000 people, one of the largest of its kind, Blacks who smoke up to a pack a day are far more likely to develop lung cancer than Whites who smoke as much. Researchers also found that Hispanic and Asian smokers were less likely than Black smokers to develop the disease, at least up to a point. The racial differences disappeared among heavy smokers, or those who puffed more than a pack and a half per day. Doctors have long known tha...

Please, please ask for chest X-ray or other diagnostic tools if you are a senior with bone complaints. Lung cancer should be ruled out first before undergoing treatment with physical therapy, painkillers and/or anti-inflammatories. My husband is one of them but the other 2 just died after months of misdiagnosis. All 3 have had a history of smoking so shouldn't a red flag gone up. X-rays of bones show very little and it's an MRI that you must have. Are doctors out there so simple-minded that they don't suspect lung cancer when it is so common?...

However after seeing a Dr at Dana Farber this week ( she has yet to begin treatment) he suggested the use of Avastin. I had done a little research on it and seems as though if has some bad side effects for lung cancer paitents. Has anyone out there been on Avastin? She/we make our final decision on Friday and her oncologist here doesn't seem too happy in the idea that she may not want to go the clinical trial route. It seemed a good idea initialy but it is a randomized study and she may not get the Herbitox. We are just looking for the extra "bang" in the treatment and are l...

Lung Cancer Is On Rise For Female Nonsmokers
Dana Reeve coughed for a year before she knew why. She never once thought of lung cancer. She had never smoked. The cancer threat never entered her mind, so she tragically did not take the cough too seriously, she said in one of her last public interviews. Dana Reeve died Monday, six months after she learned her cough was caused by the worst of all cancer killers, lung cancer. He has COPD, severe emphysema, pulmonary hypertension, recurrent pneumonia, a history of three strokes (one last month), a heart attack, congestive heart failure, and heart disease (has a defibrillator - pacemaker). We're not sure what his treatment will be yet but it's sure a lot to deal with. I think emotional support is what we ne...
