Exercise May Not Shield Women From Colorectal Cancer
February 17,2006Although it's proven to have a protective effect for men, regular physical activity may not lower a woman's risk for colorectal cancer, a new study suggests. But the study's authors caution that more rigorous research might yet reveal a benefit for women. "We shouldn't close the door on this," says senior researcher Dr. Michael F. Leitzmann, an investigator with the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. His team published its findings Friday in the online edition of the International Journal of Cancer. According to Leitzmann, basic biology supports the notion that being active cuts colorectal cancer risk. "One of the main hypotheses is that physical activity speeds...

Tumor Size Related to Cancer Spread
(UPI via COMTEX) -- New York City scientists say smaller lung tumors appear to be less likely to have spread than larger tumors among patients with asymptomatic lung cancer. The finding by Dr. Claudia Henschke of the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center and colleagues suggests early screening may be useful in detecting cancers that are still curable. Writing in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the researchers say although tumor size has been linked to cancer prognosis in patients with symptoms, the relationship between tumor size, metastasis and prognosis in asymptomatic individuals has been unclear. Chromosome Arms That Correlate With Colon Cancer Metastases Identified
Chromosome arms that correlate with occurrences of colon cancer metastases were identified. According to a study from France, "The decision to use chemotherapy in the treatment of colon cancer patients depends on the risk of developing metastases, as estimated by clinicopathological staging combining body imaging and pathological findings. The aim of this study was to identify all chromosome arms that, when allelotyped, correlate with the metastatic process, add prognostic information to pathology, and are of relevance for predicting metachronous metastases." "A 5-year follow-up survey enrolled 401 MSS (microsatellite stable) colon cancer patients who were divided into 3 groups. Staging was performed with and without imaging data (cal...

Review Focuses on Trials Targeting Lung Cancer with Vaccine Immunotherapy
Researchers review clinical trials targeting lung cancer with vaccine immunotherapy in a recent issue of Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy. According to the review from the United States, "Successful active immunotherapy is expected to be specific and nontoxic. Until now, the success of immunotherapy in cancer has been sporadic and unpredictable. This has been attributable in part to the lack of a full understanding of the mechanistic underpinnings of immune regulation." "Furthermore, the lack of systematic success of immunotherapy, as argued in this review, stems from failing to effectively target tumors such as non-small cell lung cancer," said Luis E. Raez and collaborators at the University of Miami and Tulane University. The...

"Furthermore, the lack of systematic success of immunotherapy, as argued in this review, stems from failing to effectively target tumors such as non-small cell lung cancer," said Luis E. Raez and collaborators at the University of Miami and Tulane University. The...

Minimally Invasive Surgery For Lung Cancer Compares Favorably To Open Surgery
In the largest published study of its kind, with 1,100 patient cases reviewed, a minimally invasive surgical procedure for lung cancer has been shown to be as effective as open surgery with a low risk of complications and high survival rates when performed by experienced thoracic surgeons. But even though the benefits of the technique have been documented over the past decade - shorter recovery times and hospitalizations, reduced pain, and improved quality of life, for example - it is currently used in only about 5% of the 40,000 lobectomies performed each year in the United States. An article describing the study appeared in the February 2006 issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. It is a follow-up article to one published in the s...

Breast Cancer Clinical Drug, Derived From Botanical Extract, Could Treat Aggressive Late Stage Breast Cancer
/PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- A new clinical formulation extracted from a botanical may provide physicians with a new tool in treating aggressive late-stage breast cancer. The oral anti-cancer drug BZL101, developed by Bionovo Inc., is derived from the Asian botanical herba Scutellaria Barbata. Bionovo researchers believe the herb's main agent has the ability to specifically identify and target malignant cells, leaving normal cells intact and healthy. BZL101 works by eliciting a cancer cell's innate mechanism of self-suicide, or apoptosis. The drug selectively releases Apoptosis Inducing Factor-1 (AIF1) from a cancer cell's mitochondrial membrane. AIF then moves to the cell's nucleus, disintegrating the DNA structure, an...

We just had her 2nd injection this last week. They do them every 2 weeks, lab every week and a Cat Scan every 4 weeks. She's so brave - much braver than me. " IF " this new drug works, she'll stay on the VEGF T...

Human Lung Cancer Tumors Are Suppressed by a Nuclear Export Mediator
According to research from the United States, Drosophila caliban, a nuclear export mediator, can function as a tumor suppressor in human lung cancer cells. "We previously showed that the Drosophila DNA binding homeodomain of Prospero included a 28 amino-acid sequence (HDA) that functions as a nuclear export signal. We describe here the identification of a protein we named Caliban, which can directly interact with the HDA," wrote X.L. Bi and colleagues, U.S. National Institutes of Health. "Caliban is homologous to human Sdccag1, which has been implicated in colon and lung cancer. Here we show that Caliban and Sdccag1 are mediators of nuclear export in fly and human cells, as interference RNA abrogates export of EYFP-HDA in normal fly a...

The scientists screened 28,689 men and women for lung cancer at 38 institutions worldwide b...

Endothelin-1 Promotes Cell Type Transition in Ovarian Cancer Cells
According to recently pulbished research from Italy, endothelin-1 (ET-1) promotes epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human ovarian cancer cells. "Despite considerable efforts to improve early detection and advances in chemotherapy, metastatic relapses remain a major challenge in the management of ovarian cancer. The endothelin A receptor (ETAR)/ET-1 axis has been shown to have a significant role in ovarian carcinoma by promoting tumorigenesis." "Here we show that the ET-1/ETAR autocrine pathway drives EMT in ovarian tumor cells by inducing a fibroblastoid and invasive phenotype, down-regulation of E-cadherin, increased levels of beta-catenin, Snail, and other mesenchymal markers, and suppression of E-cadherin promoter activ...
