Lung cancers reveal the diverse role of proteases in cancer progression
Lung cancers reveal the diverse role of proteases in cancer progression. "A disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) are transmembrane proteases displaying multiple functions. ADAM with thrombospondin-like motifs (ADAMTS) are secreted proteases characterized by thrombospondin (TS) motifs in their C-terminal domain," scientists writing in the British Journal of Cancer report. "The aim of this work was to evaluate the expression pattern of ADAMs and ADAMTS in non small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC) and to investigate the possible correlation between their expression and cancer progression. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses were performed on NSCLC samples and corresponding nondise...
New Research Grants Continue Progress Against Dread Cancer
Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Announces Additional $1 Million of Research Funding The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (”MARF”) announced today awards of almost $1 million in additional research funding aimed at curing mesothelioma (”meso”). An international and cross disciplinary set of nine new projects will go forward thanks to grants from MARF of $100,000 each. Researchers in [...]
Lung cancer patients with persisting mediastinal nodal involvement linked to poor prognosis
Lung cancer patients with persisting mediastinal nodal involvement were linked to poor prognosis. "Remediastinoscopy is a valuable tool in restaging non-small cell lung cancer after induction therapy for mediastinal nodal involvement as it provides pathological evidence of response and may select patients for subsequent thoracotomy. However, long-term survival data after remediastinoscopy are scarce. From November 1994 to April 2003, a remediastinoscopy was performed in 32 patients (29 men, 3 women) after induction therapy for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer," researchers in Belgium reported. "Mean age was 67.8 years (range, 47-83). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was given in 26 patients and chemoradiotherapy in 6. Follow-up dat...
What are the risk factors for mesothelioma?
Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70 percent to 80 percent of all cases. However, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos. History of exposure to various other chemicals have been found in some of these patients, but majority of these patients have no understandable risk factors for mesothelioma........
Diagnosis
Please, please ask for chest X-ray or other diagnostic tools if you are a senior with bone complaints. Lung cancer should be ruled out first before undergoing treatment with physical therapy, painkillers and/or anti-inflammatories. We live in a community with 3 people diagnosed with lung cancer around the same time. 3 months were wasted with useless treatment. My husband is one of them but the other 2 just died after months of misdiagnosis. All 3 have had a history of smoking so shouldn't a red flag gone up. X-rays of bones show very little and it's an MRI that you must have. Are doctors out there so simple-minded that they don't suspect lung cancer when it is so common?...
