Small cars have small margins, so grouping their production in a low-cost place makes a lot of sense. The idea is to keep unit costs as low as possible. But small margins also mean sensitivity to costs. Shipping costs, in particular, could seriously dent margins on small cars. India to Europe by sea is quite a long journey. Add to that the opportunity cost of using the Indian capacity for European exports when it could be supplying the high-growth domestic market, or other nearer export markets, and we can perhaps see why Hyundai is keen on building more European capacity for the supply of volume models.

Low-cost cars
If you are financially challenged, what sort of wheels do you go for? For many people, the obvious first step is to take a look at the used car market. Get yourself a 2-3-year-old Golf if you want the default used car of choice for many people in Europe. But if money s really too tight to mention, the choice is vast. Where do low-cost cars like the Renault/Dacia Logan fit in? Well, mainly they are for developing markets where there is a latent appetite for a robust and low-cost new car that is carrying design and engineering appropriate to local market needs (maybe not exactly a EuroNCAP star performer ). They can be made locally to keep cost down and simple design means low costs of maintenance. They ll stay on the road a while further helping to bring motorisation to people for whom it was previously out of reach. Curiously, another market seems to have been identified selling these cut-price cars in developed markets where they can perhaps open up a new entry-level segment. This is where it gets a little potentially strange in my mind. If the cars have to be specced up for more mature markets, then is it really worth going to all the trouble to ship em and distribute/market them? Why not just do a cheap n cheerful base Astra/Focus/Megane? Or is that not so easy any longer? How much can you de-content (love that mangled English of a verb), say, an Astra? But is the price difference between the brand spanking new low-cost car and a decent spec used car all that different? And if they are not specced up much who wants to pay for something perceived as new but rough as hell ? Volkswagen Fox didn t fly out of the showroom and why would it when there s a perfectly fine Polo for not all that many more spondoolies. Or am I being unfair? Will a Dacia Logan be no different in the eyes of a commodity/value driven consumer in Western Europe from a Chevrolet Lacetti/Nubira? And can Renault do it cheaper on the back of huge global volume and ultra-low labour rates in Romania or India? Uno, Mille, Palio and (Auto parts) new Uno

Uno, Mille, Palio and new Uno
Interesting article from our man in Mercosur, Fernando Calmon, looking at Fiat's plans for a new low-cost car in Brazil. Sounds like Fiat has been sparked into action by the threat of a low-cost Chinese car being assembled within the Mercosur area. The cheapo car will likely be the basis, though, for a worldwide successor to the Palio. It will also be a simplified version of the current Palio and may be reprise the Uno name. The 1984 European Car of the Year Uno actually lives on in Brazil as the 'Mille', an updated version of the original car (our article carries a picture of the current car, the cosmetic alterations clearly visible). Examples of old cars that quietly live on for decades, defying conventional model cycles, are intriguing. Sometimes it seems that the planned run-out period uncovers a new seam of demand, a new entry-level segment, that the manufacturer then wants to exploit for as long as possible. And then if the dealers say there is continued demand, the pressure to keep the car in production is hard to resist. Other examples that spring to mind include the Mark 1 Golf (CitiGolf) in South Africa and the will-it-ever-be-canned Maruti 800 in India. For the manufacturer it's a case of no (or very little) further product investment and the sales are just cream on top, the investment in model development and production line having been amortised many years ago. In some countries, the models survive for decades until a regulatory threshold of some sort (like tighter emissions levels necessitating a new engine) or worn out tooling make the necessary investments to keep the model going too big. But these long runners must be some of the most profitable autos ever made. It'd be interesting to see an analysis of the highest selling models of all-time. Actually, I have seen a table somewhere, Beetle at the top I think, but just can't remember where it was...

Tracinda Corporation Reinforces Intention to Pursue True Partnership
Tracinda Corporation Reinforces Intention to Pursue True Partnership

Presented By
Presented By

Advertisement:
Funny movies
Frozen Hippo offers all users free movies with funny content. Porsche therefore stays 'independent' with VW well positioned to take it over fully should it want to or ride any change to the State of Lower Saxony's stake. I spent some time talking to someone at CNN about all of this earlier and they wanted me in the London studio. Unfortunately, logistics meant that I couldn't get there in time for the programme slot. Just as well, actually. The old legs ache a bit today after completing a half marathon yesterday (time: just under 2 hours and 19 minutes, slightly better than I expected). Thanks again to all who sponsored me (I was running in aid of Cancer Research UK).

Magna and AvtoVAZ
Magna, the self-styled 'Tier 0.5' supplier, has always seemed a little more ambitious than its peers and prepared to look beyond the realms of the supplier world to actual vehicle production. I've just been speaking to Mark Bursa about what Magna is doing with Russia's AvtoVAZ and that's an intriguing subject. An article is in the works.

Pedestrian impact rules and design
If you are going to get run over by a vehicle, some are kinder to your body than others. In general, SUVs with their tall stance and chunky nature are probably not all that forgiving to flesh and bones that get in the way. But here's something I have just heard that seems a bit naughty, but maybe makes perfect sense to the manufacturer concerned. A supplier source says that the Land Rover Freelander weighs over 2.5 tonnes and was deliberately weighted up to exceed 2.5 tonnes because below that weight vehicles have to comply with tougher pedestrian impact rules. Freelander couldn t meet those, so they made it heavier to avoid having to comply. I'm told the same rules will apply to heavier vehicles next year. Imagine the engineers' discussions: 'Where can we easily build in some extra weight guys?'

I guess it will take time to see just what the ruling means, in practice. By the sounds of things, the EPA won't be rushing to tackle automotive CO2 emissions. But the terms of the wider debate in the US may have just shifted significantly. And some States may want to do their own thing too.

Happy Easter
It's an Easter break here, folks. The sun has got his hat on and there are chocolate eggs to be purchased and consumed. It's a public holiday today, Good Friday (April 6) and also on Easter Monday (April 9). We'll be out of the office on both days. Graeme Roberts is firing up his barbecue this weekend and I think it's time I got out on my bicycle and left the cars alone (yesterday's monster traffic jams have left me wanting a break from the wheel, anyway). Interesting to see news emerge yesterday that Kirk Kerkorian fancies having a go with Chrysler. The guy is certainly a tryer. Just a bit of history there... Earlier today, while my head was still trying to get around what that Supreme Court ruling on the EPA and CO2 means in the States, I was reminded that Ford has a commercial sponsorship arrangement with UEFA and the Champions League. A press release from Ford highlighted what looks like an interesting initiative to bring certain aspects of football closer to the fans. I don't think it quite means that you can have a one-on-one with Patrick Vieira about the problems of the Italian game, or quiz former referee Anders Frisk about using video technology to help with close decisions, but there are some interesting elements. Have a look for yourself. The video interview with Frisk and Vieira isn't too bad, all things considered. They do touch on some serious issues connected with the game. But I wonder who the guy with the newspaper behind Vieira is? Maybe it's his agent.

But behind the scenes, I guess a number of potential bidders have got teams in there, going over the books, casting an eye over all operations and trying to weigh up whether it s worth a punt (or just enjoy a good poke around). We should have expressions of initial interest with the DCX board by the end of the month and ahead of what might be a lively annual shareholders' meeting in Berlin on April 4. This week should see the subject in the news. But at this point, it s still anyone s guess which way this one is going to fall. For all the vehicle manufacturer expressions of non-interest, don t be surprised to learn that maybe some of them are quietly more interested than they appear. Magna has also been mentioned and several private equity groups smell a possible opportunity. And maybe Zetsche has also made a contingency plan to keep Chrysler, or parts of it, anyway. And in the background is a more vibrant and slowly recovering GM, eyeing a purchase that could consolidate its position as the world s biggest carmaker (keeping it just ahead of Toyota) for a few more years yet. GM also shares the same problems as Chrysler and its managers may feel it knows best how to fix it. Perhaps the whole auction thing is simply designed to put added pressure on GM. Two things in the background, though, are potential flies in the ointment to any deal and may also explain why DCX s management has shown less commitment to Chrysler of late. One is legacy costs pension and retiree benefits, like healthcare, that Chrysler is faced with. There s a special fund for that, but it s heavily in deficit and Goldman Sachs estimates that any company that buys Chrysler inherits legacy liabilities of US$16.5bn. It sounds daunting and it could well be that DCX is trying to offload that little lot onto someone else and isn t all that interested in realising cash for the sale, anyway. It might not be quite so daunting if a deal can be done with the UAW to get some relief on legacy costs and here lays our second fly in the ointment. While deep in the financial mire Ford and GM have had some success with the UAW on that front, the attitude of the labour union to a profitable DCX has been rather different. And that hasn t gone down too well with DCX s management. A prospective purchaser therefore has a legacy costs mountain to consider and the hassles of negotiating a deal with the UAW. It might be a challenge that only a private equity group feels confident to tackle using their typically aggressive methods. And that wouldn t be something that the workers at Chrysler would relish. If sale it has to be, I wouldn t mind betting that Zetsche would not like to be seen as the villain of the piece. Will Chrysler be left to stew in the speculation for a while before GM eventually rides to the rescue , everyone apparently happy?

Alternative fuels: hedge your bets
Interesting to hear Ford of Europe's Lewis Booth on the subject of powertrain trends, in Europe. More efficient gasoline engines will eventually dent diesel share. But diesel still will be significant and hybrids, overall, make little sense in Europe, he says. Bio fuels have a role, but there isn't enough available land to make enough fuel to feed both people and cars. In short, hedge your bets folks - that's what Ford is doing. There isn't going to be a powertrain technology winner that just hoovers up for a while yet, by the sound of things. Rob Golding heard Lewis Booth at an Automotive News Europe event in Amsterdam last week and summarised succintly: FEATURE: Ford brings back the petrol engine FEATURE: Ford remembers Rudolph Diesel and his peanut oil

Lexus Announces Pricing for All-New LS 600h L Luxury Hybrid Sedan
Lexus Announces Pricing for All-New LS 600h L Luxury Hybrid Sedan

	 Auto parts - Detroit interviews

Various meetings are scheduled (people I have to catch up with and supporting a colleague, Will Johnston, on the commercial side) plus I have been trying to squeeze in a few interviews to get some overt editorial value out of the trip. There was confirmation in my inbox this morning that I can have a slot with Jim Queen, GM group vice president of Global Engineering. That should be interesting. I've also got some time with Ford's Mark Fields which I am very much looking forward to. I'll be there the week of SAE.

The British Were Here First
The British Were Here First

Hyundai Prepares a Diesel for U.S.
Hyundai Prepares a Diesel for U.S.

Discounts
Interesting observations below on the fleet discounts available on the Peugeot 407 Coupe, which I guess helps to explain how that particular car finds a place in the market. More generally though, isn't discounting in the car business a black art? Just how firm is the list price? What is the dealer margin? Are we near the end month/quarter sales targets? Will the dealer be begging us to take it off his hands? Can I get it specced up? How much is this trade-in really worth? If I take some finance, how much is that worth to the salesman? I know buying a car is not like buying a tin of beans. It's a complex and far from homogenous product. There are lots of elements in the transaction and it's not a commodity purchase. There seems, though, something not quite right about having a list price that (almost) everyone knows is 'soft'. Except for the little old lady who innocently wanders in to the showroom and believes that the sticker price on the car is what you have to actually pay and falls for all the tricks.

Look at the sticker price on that baby.
